Just wanted to ask where people mount their dashcam on the 2016+ Land Cruiser?

Also, there appears to be an area right ahead of the rear view mirror on the windshield which is a little darker. Not sure what it is called. Can you have half the dash cam mounted on this area and other half on the clear side of windshield? Not sure if we need to keep this area clear of any dashcam or toll pass tags to not cause any interference.

in the middle. Works great. Have one in rear window too.

I like it more concealed with as much as possible covered behind the dark portion of the windshield. Both my camera and radar detector are to the right of my mirror. All cameras are wide angle now so there is not disadvantage to mounting it more to the side vs exact middle.

I drilled a hole through the ram ball mount the camera attaches to and zip tied it to my rear view mirror. It hangs down just low enough to see clearly but not get in the way of my sun shade.

the power wire easily tucks under the lip of the headliner and then behind the a pillar to make its way past the passenger seat. I run a 12v adapter/power strip from the front into the rear between the front passenger seat and center console...gives me 3 12v plugs and a few usb plugs there for the backseat. I run the camera’s power to that power strip.

What power source did you tap in to and how did you run the wires?
I have ran both wires tacked in behind the liner toward driver side and down the left pillar (couldn't fit them in only around the mirror cover where I tacked wires right between the cover and liner- believe it was middle row, 2nd one from firewall side). For the camera I have used fuse tap on driver side fuse box (used the same tap for both the camera and DRL I have installed in the bumper). For the Radar detector I have used Valentine1 Savvy which uses OBD port.

Yep. I have my RD mounted up high to the drivers left corner, easy to control. I live in VA.... Gives me quick access to take down if needed however, you can't really see it looking at the front of windshield or when LE pulls up next to me.

I'm not too concerned if anyone sees the camera, in some cases that's a good thing. It's hardwired to a dual battery along with the rear camera.

Nice Valentine remote, didn't know they had an OBD option.

Appreciate the replies. What is the dotted (dark) area on the windshield? Is this an area you do not want to mount anything like dashcam or toll pass? Not sure if it is this way to not interfere with any type of sensor.

The dotted areas don't interfere with the Florida EZ Pass toll road system.

To add to the list of mounting: I mounted my front camera with as much of it hidden behind the dots as possible.

Even if the sensor was messed up, the cameras just check your plate and bill you that way instead. They always check to see if your vehicle is already registered for autopsy before they send you a fine.

What are dash cams for? Serious question. I live in a rural area, so expect it is more related to urban or suburban uses?

Protection in case of an accident. No longer he said, she said. I got rear ended few years back. The guy said that I have slammed on brakes when trying to stop at the red light. Camera clearly showed that I didn't and that I was in a full stop for at least couple seconds before you can hear his tires and an impact. Sent a copy to insurance. Best witness you can get. Of course it can play against you if you do stupid stuff.

Thank you for educating me.

I never thought much about them either until I was in Singapore on business years ago and noticed almost everyone had a camera installed mainly for what @luke27617 stated due to harsh insurance laws and penalties.

Anyway, they capture great video/photos while wheeling. I've captured some pretty nice shots of wildlife running across the road. Most people in my hood would never believe we have a lot of elusive wild turkeys and big bucks.

Can record audio as well, helped me narrow down exactly when and where I threw an audible error code on a specific section of a trail. Captured a pretty entertaining discussion with a State Trooper after getting pulled over once. Theft prevention, aid in prosecution etc.

Hey all, wanted to bump this thread instead of starting a new one. How did you all install the rear camera and wire it?

I mounted on back glass. Ran cable under the moulding, through that black rubber sleeve back into the cabin. They went along the passenger top side, slightly under the headliner to the front windshield.

If you are bored do a search on funny Russian dash cam videos. You will see some really stupid crap. And as folks said it is for insurance scam as well as for corrupt police.

Insurance scam protection, additional information for collision fault determination, recording things that people wouldn't believe without video, etc. - yes all of those and more. I've been running one for at least 12 years now, since a pedestrian tried to insurance scam my wife while she was driving our GL450 in downtown Manhattan. I was on the fence at the time - once she told me the story I ordered it that moment and have had them in all vehicles since. It's super cheap insurance - about $250-$300 for a current Blackvue model (there are now many quality brands/models) - set it up and forget it. If you need to retrieve a piece of video, just connect your smartphone using wifi and open the app.

I've actually now helped three different people (strangers) who got hit in hit-and-run events - two while moving, one while parked. Also filmed a local school van/bus driver zooming >200 yards down a busy street at rush hour with all 4 wheels over the double yellow in the opposing traffic lane,, with little kids on board, trying to beat the line of stopped traffic to get to a left turn lane stub. The local PD sgt. who handles the school safety, crossing guards etc. was very interested in that footage.

In my German vehicles I've typically used Mirrortaps (MirrorTap; America's leading RJ11, DC Plug Mirror Power Cord - https://blendmount.com/mirrortap/) to get power to the dashcam, jacking into the molex connector behind the plastic shroud around the rear view mirror stem. Has anyone had any luck going that route in the LC200? Any DIY knowledge on how to remove the surround, and/or which pins offer switched power?

/UPDATE I found this thread Mirrortap 2016 Land Cruiser question - https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/mirrortap-2016-land-cruiser-question.1035259/

Anyone connect dash cam to a portable battery pack and store inside sunglass holder? Also is there a system where rear camera connects to front cam via bluetooth? Trying to eliminate wires running everywhere.
