So the truck has been through a thorough tune up. Air/fuel filters, iridium plugs, fuel pump, PCV, all fluids and filters, grease fittings blah blah blah. New exhaust and sensors. No valve adjustments yet. Truck runs great. Lots of power, 'fast' as ever, or at least it accelerates like never before. Stock tires, over inflated.
It's kept in a heated garage, so no warming up is necessary. Here in the Northeast they run oxygenated gas in the winter, something about pollution or whatever. I use 87 octane. My first full tank I got 13.08 MPG. My second I got 253 miles and put in 20.44 gallons=12.38 MPG. I might've topped that one off a little too much.
This is mostly around town driving, with 10 or 15 mile sprints at 60-70 MPH several times per week.
So is 12-13 MPG around town normal? Sounds like it.

I drive a 60 with an H55, so I can't speak directly to this, but it seems like the general consensus is that the auto in the 62 returns good mileage once the torque converter locks up, but driving in town or running bigger tires without regearing keeps the TC from locking up and returns very poor fuel economy.
ARB front & side/KAYMAR rear bumpers, winch, dual batteries and 33x12.50/15's = 9-10 MPG. Really doesn't change much on extended trips.
The torque converters lock up around 52 mph, not likely going to see much lock up with "normal" in town driving.
I'm in the middle of an overnight road trip and getting some encouraging mileage numbers. Running 33" BFG's...also interesting is the diffence in my odometer and speedometer reading compared to the GPS app on my iPhone.
Will report results late today or tomorrow.
Usually get around 15 mpg on an average. That is with 190k and change on the clock.

Best I saw was shortly after getting my FJ62 with 175k miles. It really liked Eastern Oregon/high desert 4000ft altitude and would get 17-19mpg highway up there, fairly stock setup, 30" tires. That is where the A440's massive O/D gear shines. In the valley, with 100' altitudes it would get up to 17mpg. It had lived its life at 4000' so I assume was tuned to perfection for it. Was a really clean truck before I got to it.
19mpg is considered a "bad tank" now.
TBH, the reason for a diesel was range, not mileage. I have no fantasies that I am going to be saving hundreds of dollars a year, with diesel costing significantly more $$$ than premium gas prices. The purpose is to be able to go *further* in the boonies than I could before, while having solid power for passes and steep inclines (while loaded to 6300lbs), and a bit of grunty stab of the pedal for a ledge when I need it.

I don't think anybody's lying. I drive the FJ62 because I like the looks and the rugged simplicity of everything. I don't care so much about mileage. My JEEPS seldom did any better on mileage. The JEEPS were good vehicles, I just like the Toyota a lot more. Its unique and rides a lot better than the JEEPS. I average about 10.5 to 11 around town never getting the transmission to lock-up more than a minute or so here and there. On the highway, I've gotten around 17 between here and Houston, round trip at mostly 70 mph and that was with the big old BFGs on there. Now I'm running Michelen Navigator AT LT265/75R/16 which are not nearly as stiff and ride a lot better. I haven't had them on the highway, but I think I might get better mileage with them.
