What is the best carb for my 71 1F motor. I have no smog and just want the thing to run good with no drama. My Rochester is a pile of junk.

And where is the best place to get one a a fair price?

Stock. As for cost it depends how much "they" are asking. Go to the for sale section and look for someone parting out an early 40. When you get the stock carb send it to Mark for a rebuild.

good luck

The "NonUSA" vacuum advance Aisen carb mated to a vacuum advance distributor. (Your truck came with vacuum retard). Otherwise desmogged.

Any of the LC specific Aisan carbs from 70-74 will work, but there are a few things to consider.

1. Only the 70-73s worked with a cable, and that cable is similar to, but different to the one you currently have for the Rochester, so you will need a new cable as well.

2. Chances are your Rochester is bolted via and adapter directly to the intake manifold. You will need a stock phenalic spacer and 4 studs to adapt the stock carb back onto the intake.

3. Unless you are one of the select few that had an adapter made to fit the mouth of the Rochester into the stock air cleaner assembly, chances are fairly good that you do NOT have the stock air cleaner, and that will need to be acquired as well. Mounting said air cleaner requires loosening the two forward head bolts on the driver's side of your engine. Not a risk free proposition, not a deal-killer either. Just something worth mentioning.

4. No need to hold out for a non-US Aisan carb to get the vacuum advance port. It can be retrofitted. I do a lot of those during the rebuilding process at my shop, and I'm sure that Jim C. does it as well.

I can help you source all the parts if you like. You can call the shop number, linked below, for more info.

i run the mighty 1bbl and it works good but when Mark flew by me at 75mph lastweek in his 40 going up hill i will tell you that the 2bbl kick the sh** out of the 'mighty 1bbl'

hey barry,

i've got a 71ish carb (i'll check the exact date when i get back to my house today) that would be good as a rebuild core if you're interested in it. i've got the phenolic spacer too...

let me know if you want any pics or anything,

Barry, you are in the EXACT SAME DILEMMA that I was in about 2 weeks ago!! I have a 1974 stock Aisin carburetor and air cleaner assembly coming from Degnol even as we speak! Your Rochester, and mine, are an ok carb at best, but the stock one is far superior. They were installed during an era when gas was cheap and people were trying to get as much HP as possible, not thinking about overall performance and efficiency. The choke actuator will be tricky, as I still haven't solved that problem yet. My 1974 has a flexible rod inside the metal sheath, as I'm sure yours does, which I think is deemed the 'cable' type. I'm still trying to locate the actuator piece. I'll let you know when I find one.

thanks

Thanks fellas, I didn't hear anyone mention that Holly 32/36 that all the distributors seem to have.
Most everyone is right. I have a spacer from the manifold but I still have all the original air cleaner stuff. I sounds like a stock one is the way to go. EBay has a rebuilt one for 250 but they want a core.
Thankyou everyone.

I, too, have a Rochester that I'm looking to replace w/an Aisan. Where can I find one for my '68 FJ40? SOR has ones for 69 on. Would that work w/some sort of adapter?
Also, as far as I know, the air cleaner is stock, but I'm not sure what the adapter for the Rochester to fit in that would look like, so I can't say for sure.

Finally, my manifold is a 2bbl that had a stock 1bbl carb on it, is there a reason to avoid a 2bbl other than lower mileage?

Thanks.

Breck.

1968 was a funny year for carbs + intakes. You may have the one-year-only "high performance" intake (kind of a joke in my book) that was built for a two-barrel carb. In 1968 this manifold was supplied with an adapter plate to mate to the one-barrel AISIN carb. This was the last year for the one-barrel carb. I have pictures of this setup OEM from my '68 if you want to see it.

Sure, would love to see some pix. Also, now that it seems I want to go back to a stock carb, do you know of a place that sells Aisin carbs w/adapters that will work for the 68?

Thanks.
