Hello everyone.......... besides ARB, which I know most people regard as the best lockers out there, I would like to hear from your experience on which lockers or other alternatives are the best for mud and sand. NOT snow and NOT rock crawling....Im talking about hard core jungle mud and occational sand. I own a 1998 FZJ73 with DANA 60 in the rear and I just want to install either something in the front or in the rear but not both. Which way to go is better?.

Thank all for your advise.

Any autolocker would do the job well in mud. You'd probably see the best performance from a rear locker. Aussie Lockers are well regarded and inexpensive. I love all three of mine.

Hi All:

I agree with "35Inch" regarding the autolocker . . . . though there is certainly nothing wrong with an Air Locker!

Unfortunately it does not appear that the "Aussie Locker" is available for the Dana 60 axle. The Lockrite (which the Aussie Locker is a clone of) is available for the Dana 60:

It will probably be fine for your application, but if you want to go stronger consider the Detroit Locker:

Good luck, and post some pics of your rig wheeling! :D

*doh*

Come to think of it,
Does this rig see any pavement? If not, or if it sees very little, you might as well go with a spool. I think it's obvious that I've never shopped around for traction devices for a D60, but I'm pretty sure spools are available(and cheap!).

Whats the general consensus for putting a spool on the front then running the hubs unlocked when on pavement, or say when you need a bit more traction but not the full deal just locking one of the hubs?

id say the consensus is just spend the $250 on an Aussie locker so you don't have to get out of the truck all the time to lock/unlock hubs..

for the rear a spool works fine, but sucks on the pavement, or side hill situations.

lincon rear, open front or elec. does yours have the small front diff? if so then elec will beef it up with a stronger center case. the open is weak and an Aussi, Lock right, ARB will not strengthen it at all, if anything it will cause it to break quicker.

spool front SUCKS. BTDT.

disagree with side hilling with a lincon locker, it does handle differently but it can be done safely.

lincon on the highway, no biggie at all. lincon on TIGHT turns (like in a parking lot) will cause tire wear, squaking and hopping... i ran a lincon for decades on the highway/off road with no issues (other than the tire wear)... mine you, if you do not have common sense then a lincon is not for you.

How do you tell if its the small diff? it doesn't look that small? it does NOT have a diff cover its a solid welded unit so the only way in is from the axle side, does that mean anything?
(front)

ummm, the front diff in a 70 series came in two sizes to 98. from conception to 1990 the 7* series had the same size diff front and rear n(9.5") (and were interchangeable), in 1990 to 98 the front diff was a minitruck sized diff (8").

access to the frotn diff is a complete tear down of the FF front and removal out the back, yours is an 89 so it will look the same size as the rear... since it is.

I recently ran into some information about a US based company "OX Locker"... cable operated system seems pretty simple and rugged enough... any opinions on that?

locker

If it is just for mud, than you cant beat a spool, inexpensive, very strong, fully locked. If its also a street vehicle than a mechanical locker like a lock right or Detroit would be good, or a selectable locker like the eaton elocker or arb locker would be good. The Dana 60 rear has many options available, it really depends on your useage and budget. We stock most of the different options and ship worldwide.
