I’m sure this has been beat to death, after digging through years of threads I have not found a good answer.

My 69 has a home built belt setup on it. It works, until the belt gets worn and then it starts slipping. It’s unknown age. You know when you have a gm size belt trying to run on a Toyota size pulley.

So I’m looking at doing it correct. My pump and alternator are great, alternator is a new GM single wire 60amp. I would like to keep them, I don’t have to but I’d prefer not to spend any more money than I have to. I also plan to go down the fan clutch/ plastic fan route as I do this.

Here is what I currently have.

Do I need to get a passenger 2f alternator Mount and move my alternator over to that side with the correct width pulley? Go back to an internally regulated Toyota alternator?

On the power steering I have found a Mount to bolt it to the head and it seems to have belt adjustment in it. I know I need the correct width pulley for the Toyota size belt.

I don’t feel like the bracket I found (which shows alternator in lower driver side location) will have sufficient tension/ contact on the pulleys. So I don’t “want” to Do it this way unless it’s proven.

Here are pictures of what I have found.

Or is there a better option I’m missing?

Does the alternator occupy the rear groove in the crank pulley or front if it is on the passenger side?
If it is the rear that will conflict with power steering I assume.

I'm thinking that when I do it I'll be putting the Toyota pulley on the GM alternator. Not sure if I will need to bore out the pulley or make a bushing.

You have to get the alternator aligned correctly most importantly I think. Can't see how it is currently mounted but the tension is pulling it towards the engine and causing a misalignment which is eating the belts. I run a GM alt on the passenger side with the stock toyota bracket. Think I just had to add shims or washers to the mounting bolt to get that tight.

How does yours adjust? Factory style tensioner?
Also is the belt direct to the alternator or does it go around the water pump as well?

I should note that the belts that are currently on it are my spare belts that are in rough shape.

Yes, factory tensioner on the alt. PS pump on driver side with home made bracket. I have a 2 groove crank pulley and a 2 groove water pump pulley. 2 belts. One goes crank, WP, PS other goes crank, WP, alt.

Picture? 3 rib crank pulley or 2?

Thanks!

Edit: re read. You have a 2 groove crank. Is the front groove thinner?

driver side pump mount uses motor mount bolts.Either one is better then head bolt mount your looking at in my opinion, both places can help you with parts and advice for what your wanting to do, both very helpful and best of the best!

Thank you!

Further info on this.

I thought I had it all sorted. I have my parts pile.

I tore my 40 apart this morning before work in preparation to swap everything over in the next couple days.

It turns out I have one of the press on 2 groove pulleys and the 3 groove with but I have will not work.

My outer pulley groove is thinner than the inner.

I guess it’s time to back up. I did find mark offered a wide pulley at one time.

Thats where my ps pump is mounted. I cut the ears off of a factory bracket (alternator i think) that mounted on pan rail, then drilled and tapped. To this i bolted a fabricated steel bracket that pump attached to.
