On cold starts, i have a slight squeak, really a light whine, from the pulley/belt area up front. It is more noticeble when outside temperature is cooler. Once the engine warms up it goes away.

I replaced both tensioner pulley and belts, OEM, about 18 months ago.

I first checked the belts, they could use a little tightening, so I did. I thought maybe since they were slighty loose, this was causing the whine and when they heated up and expanded slightly the whine stopped.

Tightening the belts didn't change anything, no better no worse.

If it was a pulley, a/c or something, going, wouldn't it sound the same way regardless of engine temp?

I have tried on several occasions, but can't seem to locate exaclty where the sound is coming from, maybe my hearing is going.

Thouhts? I'd sure like to get it cured before it does get cold out.

prob a bearing? But easiest thing to do is to spray some of that belt dressing stuff on the belt first and see if that will do it?

DRTDuck, you may have the somewhat infamous power steering whine... a lot of us do. See what this thread does for you.. http://65.219.61.46/forum/showthread.php?t=10769 I still have the .wav file around somewhere if you're interested, PM me your email if so. -tim

Thanks, didnt think of belt dressing.

nakman- I now recall that string, thanks for posting it. that may well indeed be it. Just seems to be a tad more than last year. Of course I haven't put any new PS fluid in in a couple years. :(

I'll check belts again and see if I can locate the sound to the PS pump.

Have a listen to the alternator as well. With my 60 I had a squeal from the alternator, especially when cold, which got progressively louder over a couple of months until the alternator went tits up.

nakman- thanks for sending the .wav, that is not the current noise, but i definately get than when under 30 degrees or so. My current sound was definately pulley or belt.

I was presuming it was a pulley as I stated earlier, new OEM belts 18 months ago.

I thought, what the heck I try some belt dressing as suggested. I went out to put a dap on and I noticed "made in the USA" on my belts.  :censor:

Who knows what I was thinking back then, obviously I wasn't. The belt dressing took care of the noise, and I don't hear any pulleys sounding odd. Next trip to deler I'll get new belts.

I hadn't used belt dressing for years, at first the sound was terribley, they actually stated squeaking, but after about 10 minutes the went quite. Obviously if OEMs this wouldn't even have been an issue.

I have a simialr belt noise. They're all Toy belts and the noise went away temporarily when I sprayed some silicone spray on the belt/pulley interface. Seems to be getting louder as time passes. They're about a year old or so. I'll check the tension and try belt dressing.

Bell dressing only masks the issue, not resolving it - so what's been done is kinda subjective here.

seems to me that what belt dressing does is to probide better adhesion between belt and pulleys so there is no slippage, which is what you would have with a new belt that hasn't been "polished" yet.
So in that sense I guess you could say it solves the "slippage/adhesion" issue (temporarily)

From what happened to my inlaw's Chrysler T&C (belt jumped off), I don't think so. IMO, the slippage exists but the dressing compresses the noise down till it's gone.

In our LC, I think most of the squeals (if not cause by a bad bearing) is coming from the matched twin belts due to the different rotation speeds. To confirm this, and if you're changing to OEMs anyway, cut one off in the mean time.

Frank.

I have a matched set that say Mitsubishi on them and also say Made in the USA. What's with that? Are the OEM belts made here?

They didn't squeak until after running the Rubicon (dirt perhaps?). I just applied some belt dressing Monday and the squeaking is gone.

Mitsuboshi actually. The current belts are indeed made in the US.
