Question to the group? A buddy is useing an old bellview winch for his cruiser- he just smoked the motor moving tree limbs the other day. I found this pic on e-bay that some one had mated a new 8274 WINCH MOTOR to the bellview winch and also made a bracket for the Clutch brake off of an 8274 to be used on the bellview. Any body have some ideas to how and what parts to use? Or where to go to find out.
I just rebuilt my 8274- so i have good knowledge of that unit, the sliding gear on the end of the motor would be the only tricky part i think. http://groups.msn.com/EmeraldCoastT...rshuanwinch.msnw?action=ShowPhoto&PhotoID=407 http://groups.msn.com/EmeraldCoastT...rshuanwinch.msnw?action=ShowPhoto&PhotoID=406

I'm not sure what you're asking. Does your friend just want to repair/replace his motor? If so what are those pictures for, and what does the clutch brake have to do with the motor?

I've got both an 8274 and an earlier Warn 5687 (might have that wrong - it's outside). The motor appears the same for both and there is a guy in ebay selling a motor that I think will fit and drive either winch. He used to say that his motors had a shaft diameter of .750" until I asked if he had any with a .669" shaft which is the size of the one in each of my winches. He now lists the shaft of his motor as being .669". It's a place in Tennessee with a buy-it-now of $149.
My earlier winch, even though it has Warn markings, is more like the bellviews in configuration of the clutch lever assemblies. All of the lever junk does what the round black knob does, or is supposed to do, on 8274 - engage/disengage the spool by moving the sliding gear that you mentioned. The motor will run the cable out if the lever/knob things are stuck in the engaged position, It's slower than freely pulling out the cable but still usable.

Sorry I wasn't clearer..

He wants to upgrade his bellview winch motor to a warn 8274 winch motor -
The warn 8274 winch motor has power in and out-
The bellview only has power in-
The brake clutch assy in the picture is automatic / compared to the bellview handle push pull rod set up.
QUESTION: Has anyone done this upgrade and did it req any special parts?

Note: Found pics on ebay, looked like a good idea. thats all

Thanks Ray

buy a new winch....

Ebay the old stuff....

Good luck!

Before you say to dump the old stuff Mr. Poser, I'm a full time single dad and my Cruiser fund is counted with a change jar, not Benjamins. Feed my boy and pay my mortgage, or deck out the 40? $90 bucks for a motor is better than $300 for a Harbor Freight special.

For those that know more about these motors, would this be a good candidate for a drop in replacement with minor modifications?

It is a Warn, Prestolite 46-2262, MBJ4401
Voltage: 12
Rotation: Reversible
Field Hsg OD: 113.9mm / 4.484in
Overall Length: 225.2mm / 8.866in
Shaft OD: 17mm / 0.669in
Shaft Notes: Long Keyway
Terminal 1 Size: 5/16-18

The shaft is the same size as the Belleview's

you can buy presto lite motors new from Romaine Electric Corporation 1-800-547-0361

Are they the original motors or are they reversible like the modern ones? Have a part number?

A Warn 9.5XP winch motor should be a bolt-in replacement except that you'll have to use a later splined spur gear on the end of the motor instead of the keyed one you have. You can buy the splined gear from Warn, assuming that it is the same number of teeth as the 8274 spur gear. The good news is, the 9.5XP motor is more than double the hp of the original Prestolite. The bad news is, it costs $300 (or it did when i bought one to put on my 8274 a few years ago).

Here is a photo of a 9.5XP motor on my 8274:

i believe you will also need solenoids, and controller plus the motor plus the automatic brake parts your talking about i dont see a lot of savings here verses a good used 8724.

Ill have to wire up my own solenoid pack or ill find a used one. As for the savings, your probably right but I like to tinker on things and shine up an old part so its more about the satisfaction of rebuilding it myself than swiping a debut card in two minutes. I'm in no hurry so ill do a bit at a time.

Hey SlickRock, did you come up with an answer to this question? I just picked up a Belleview this weekend thinking it was a 8274. I only spent $150, so If can update it to a new motor and newer auto brake/clutch, why not?

I have found tons of questions asking the same thing on the internet but no real answers other than "call Warn" or "call MN 4 Wheel Drive". I did find the posts on Pirate that documented swapping armatures into a Ramsey, which was pretty cool. Also found references to a kit to basically turn it into an 8274, but no part numbers or conformation that it worked..... Frustrating.

Any update or new information would be greatly appreciated.

TIA.

There is a motor that can be used to make it power in and out, but I don't have the part number off hand. I'm going to replace the brake material with modern brake lining held in place with apoxy and rivets. I read something about it online with positive results but I don't have the link on my phone. Email me and I can try to find it.
