Okay, I've researched the whole 24volt issue and now I'm really close to purchasing a 1988 BJ74 from a private seller. Can anyone give me an idea of what a fair price would be in Canadian dollars. The vehicle has very minimal rust, seems to be mechanically sound, has 192,000kms, PTO winch, auto tranny, Limited slip rear axle, power windows, door locks, suspension seats...needs tires, windshield. Thanks.

10 to 20,000. I know, big margin, but that's what Ive seen in pricing.

WayneO can help you out here better than I.

Just as a reference point, Outback currently has a 74 equipped like that, with 60,000 less kms on it. They're asking $15,800, and for that price it will be spotless and have had a thorough going over. Plus it will need no bodywork and come with a new set of tires.

get it checked out, it has some rust the pto universal will need an overhaul needs tires and windshield, with the right person the 74 can last 500,000 before anything needs an overhaul or the wrong owner can litterally f-c- everything up in 90,000 km caveat emptor if you do not know what you are getting into be careful! good luck

Some rust, auto, high (for a JDM)kms need w/s, tires = $8000. Maybe $500 more because its a VX. Add $2000 if it has cable lockers.

Keep your eyes open and you'll find sub $11,000 BJ74s fairly regularly.

$10,000 give or take $1000 depending on the unknown variables. I'm assuming that becase it has LSD that it doesn't have cable lockers. Make sure to look closely for signs of body work. I learned that lesson on my last BJ74 purchase.

Thanks for everybodys replys...couple more questions...someone listed "auto" like it was a bad thing...is this not a desirable tranny in the BJ74?? Also someone suggested getting it checked out...I did go over it pretty good myself, but I'm no cruiser expert so can anyone recommend a good place in Calgary, AB. Canada that is familiar with these units? Also, would it ad a good deal of value to the vehicle if it had a new Oldman Emu suspension and new snorkel? Thanks.

I can look at it for you. Mike at Pro-active auto will too.

I think the auto (A440) is less desirable for most but if you prefer one you'll probably save a little money. They are reliable and there is currently a thread elsewhere on this site praising them.

Emus ($1500) and snorkel ($500) add at least 50% of their cost to the value.

When I originally bought my Bj74 W/auto the plan was to swap in a 5 speed that I had sitting around from a previous Bj74. I decided to wait a month or so and a couple of wheeling trips and give the auto a chance. I'm glad I did because I saved myself a bunch of time and $$$. The auto is very capable for offroad, which was my main concern, and for city driving you can't beat it. On the highway I haven't noticed any difference between the auto and 5 speed. As far as the OME kit is concerned, it's the single best upgrade you could do to your truck.

i can give it a going over...
192,000 km?? cheap, real cheap... MAYBE $8000 closer to $6000 is a realistic price...

Wow, that's quite a bit lower than this guy is asking...I see people listing these units for $14,000 if they are rust free or close to rust free and mechanically sound, and as for it having 192,000kms...I thought it wasn't that high for a diesel. Ya, 192,000kms on a gas vehicle would definitely be a major factor on it's value , but on a diesel??? So...lets say I'm looking at this one for $12,000...Is that really too much? Thanks.

buddy, bring it by and let me go for a spin... maybe i am picturing a rougher truck than it really is...

192,000 km is not high for a diesel but the price should reflect the milage. $12,000 is WAY too high but then what do i know? i only sell vehicles and work on cruisers...

Which is why Crushers sees all the best deals and generally get the first stab at them. The rest of us, on the other hand, usually have to pay a bit more. I'd *really* like to know about any $6k BJ74s Crushers comes across and doesn't buy himself. At any rate, I think Crusher's prices are about 20% low so that rig sounds like it might be about 2-3K higher than where I think it should be. The accessories bring it a little closer if they are what the buyer wants.

I'd take Crusher's up on his offer to look it over and then make an offer based on what you learn.

Bruce,
you got it, any units i see that i do not want you will get first dibs on... no problem.

seriously, i am not into the BJ74 series. they are tough trucks and cool rides (espec with the "Lowenbrau Mods") but i have grown very attached to the HZJ73 and the rag top 70s... i guess it is beacuse there are just SOOOO many of them around now...

cheers

12k is about right IMO. I'd say if you could get it for 10-11k it would be a good deal for you. Oh yeah, and autos suck :flipoff2:

and you are basing this information on??

you have driven and wheeled an auto?
you buy and sell cruisers?

Well....Thanks for everyone's input, but I'm getting more unsure about this purchase now than I was before. I may just stick with what I know (jeeps). The tech info is great, but with the huge gap in opinions on price, (a couple people actually saying only $8000 or less but everytime I see one for sale it's selling for between $10,500-14,000) it's hard to know if I'm getting hosed or not and there are as many negative opinions on 24 volt as there is positive opinions. Also, thinking that my insurance company(who would insure it at this point) could suddenly drop coverage with a letter, and leave me with a big useless and worthless chunk of steel and rubber sitting in my garage, scares the crap out of me. If only these rigs were LHD and 12 volt...The truck would already be in my garage under going mods and accessory installs.:frown:

Next time you are in Calgary look me up. We'll go for a run and I'll show you how much the auto sucks.

Come on, just take the plunge. There's no way a BJ74 in good shape with less than 200k is worth $8k IMO.. I'd like to see an ad Wayne. Where have you seen them? I still see CDN 60s with > 300k going for $8k around here.

RACKMAN, You are correct in your observation that most sell for $10k-$14k. That is why I say offer 10-11k for it and see what happens. These trucks keep their resale value very well so you don't have a lot to lose.

i know of one in Calgary right now (at least 2 weeks ago it was) that is forsale for $8000 165,000 km limited slip minor rust auto. he does not have it advertised, he does not like selling stuff... not everyone is into dealing with people.

also BJ74 ARE NOT holding their value. they are dropping as more and more people are bringing in the higher milage units. what a person asks does not mean that is what they are getting so unless you are actively watching the market and actually KNOW what these are selling for you are blowing smoke up this guys ass.

especially with the HZ and PZ hitting the market in record numbers the older units are dropping in value.

i have watched as people have been conned into purchasing s*** for big money then try and resell later and loosing thousands.

there is NO WAY i would pay $12,000 or even $10,000 for any cruiser that is reaching 200,000 km.

BTW, you see CDM 60s with 300K on them SELLING for $8k or asking $8k...big difference.
