Just got back form a great Baja surf trip and thought I would share some pics and a report. We went down last Friday the 19th through San Ysidro to surf and explore the region around Erendira. On the way down we stopped at La Fonda to check the surf and found that a lot of the businesses that were there last year had closed and were boarded up due to the drop in tourism. There were fewer American tourists and surfers down there than I have seen in a long time, a few American fisherman were at Coyote Cal's but the rest were Australian, Brazilian, and Venezuelan. The surf had a little size to it (shoulder to head high +) but the wind kicked our buttes on Friday and Saturday before dying down on Sunday for a perfect day of uncrowded surf. Here are a few pics.

That is awesome! I really like the campsite uptop overlooking the surf, surrounded my palms.

ahhh, memories...

Is that checkpoint the one near Maneadero? If so, they're usually the best group to joke around with, we brought them a blow-up doll once. It was better than Christmas:D

Great pics. Thanks for sharing. Is the surf spot protected at all from the wind? Beach break right?

awesome pictures!!

Nice pics thanks for sharing. That wind does look pretty brutal but an uncrowded day with great waves in Baja definitely makes it worth it.

The checkpoint is on the road to Tecate on the way back. They pretty much just waved us through without checking us out.

It was pretty much all beach break where we were at with the exception of the far north end of Long Beach where there is a cliff that forms a little point break. If you paddle out right against the cliff and rocks there is a channel that takes you out where you hardly need to paddle and it dumps you out at the peak. On Sat and Sun this is where we surfed all day to take advantage of the channel and not fight the wind.

Some of the guide books say that this area is protected from the wind but I never felt protected at all. I talked to some of the fisherman at Coyote Cal's who went out on Sat and some of them were getting sea sick due to the rough conditions.

Nice Dan, I have surfed quite a bit in that area. There are a few options there in the area.I have surfed dwn by k181 proper and where your photos were taken plus north of there on that last big finger/penninsula, the one you can drive out on and camp on the north side, the south side little cove beack break can get good on high tide with offshores blowing too. I really want to go back , let me know next time your planning on going. How was the road from hwy to erindira? It used to be paved most of the way...

thats considered glassy up here:princess:, what were the water temps like, last week started needin a full suit up here:eek:

The road to erendira was paved but in bad shape in some areas, I wasn't paying attention to the road when we were driving in and I hit a pretty deep pothole that got my attention immediately. I'll let you know next time we head down. I think my next trip I will be flying into Cabo, but after that I want to drive down to Bahia Ascunsion (sp?) and check that area out.

The water temps were not bad, I wore shorts and a jacket the first day and was just a little bit cold so I switched to a 3/2 fullsuit for the rest of the trip. The water temp in SD is still 66 so no wetsuit yet here.:D

Sweet report Dan. Looks like all and all a great trip. You guys get any pics of each other surfing?

I was not able to get any of the other guys surfing, I am trying to collect photos form the rest of the group to see if they were able to take any.

Dude you're a polar bear....:D

Yeah, I guess growing up in Montana I have a different perspective on what is cold.:hillbilly: It needs to get down to 64 before I will consider a wetsuit.
