This picture was in a book published in 1974. As the story goes, the road crew maintained that awful road from Puertecitos to Gonzaga Bay with a wheelbarrow and hand tools. They had a beer can on a bush for donations.

Of course, what caught my eye in the pic was the FJ40. Even then, they were the toughest 4WD of choice for that miserable road. Much of the road is now paved, as Mikie saw. But the remainder from the pavement-end to Hwy 1 still sucks.

The good ol' days.

Cool story and picture. I agree - they knew the 40 was the best tool for the job.
