I've got a 1KZTE 3.0 in my 1991 4Runner. I've had lots of overheating problems and lack of power lately. Whenever I re-set my computer (disconnect the batteries) the computer goes back into default a/f ratio and the problem improves for awhile. I have more black smoke (good thing) after I re-set. After awhile there is virtually NO black smoke from it, which means that the engine is running very lean. I went through and tested all of my sensors and it seems that the injection pump correction resistors have gone bad. All the rest of within spec. They should be reading 0.1-2.5 ohms. Actual reading is 242ohms on the one, and 315ohms on the other. Does anyone know if it is possible to just replace the resistors or do I have to replace the whole injection pump? The repair manual says to replace the pump... I would just like to see if there is a way around that. Also, anyone know where I can get one? I think there may be a little bit of piston slap now too. I realize this will decrease my power, but not in
"spurts" as it has been doing. I'll do a compression test soon and see how bad the slap/leakage is.

thanks for your comments,

Josiah

Why do you want black smoke? The 1KZ TE is designed to pass stringent anti pollution laws in various parts of the world.
I see Prados every day and its only by the badges can you tell the difference between petrol and diesel.
They are very soccer mum friendly;)

I know of other pumps that have gone bad electronically and it aint pretty.
Ive heard of people being charged $3000+ in oz.
I think Toyota take the old pump and rebuild them and give you another
Having said that I do not know much about these pumps, only the occasional tidbit on aussie forums.
Im friendly with a diesel shop owner who specialises in toyota pumps ,Ill run it by him tomorrow time permitting.

There are non electronic(less electronics) pumps for these found on Dyna trucks ect. No idea if they would work.

Well, along the lines of black smoke, I've had an F250, and it ran better when there was adequate black smoke... and the 4Runner used to smoke more when it ran better. It's possible that when it ran better it didn't have anything to do with the balck smoke. If you wouldn't mind asking your friend and letting me know what he says that would be cool. There are no shops around me that work on these engines at all.

Black smoke can can be bad injectors or overfuelling.
The fuel comes out in a drop at 1st rather than a regular spray pattern causing a hot spot on the piston and in the long term, burns a hole through it.
The black smoke also soots the oil up.
There is some increased power from overfueling but with the 1KZ TE I feel if it was running right it would get max power.
I wouldnt confuse these diesels with Ford or GM diesels or even the old 4runner engine.

I will try to ask around today. Here we have our xmas and summer break combined and things are only just starting to open up

I spoke to the dealer and they do not carry any spare electronic parts for these pumps at all.
They will sell you a new pump for $2500AUD which seems to be in line with other owners experiences.

Yikes!

Wow! I didn't think the injector pump would cost $3,150 USD new. Eeek!!! Thanks for checking on it. I'm going to call a buddy that lives in Guatemala today and see what the prices are down there. I would kinda prefer to stay with the electronic since I went to the trouble to make the 4Runner right-hand drive to keep the electronic in the beginning. But, there is no way I think it wise to spend $3,150USD on an injection pump, when down in Guatemala (when I was there for 5 months) my buddy bought a 2.5L diesel from a '05 toyota van ($3,400USD) and we put it in his 4Runner. The injector pump was swapped on it for a non-electronic, and the engine did great until it over-heated really bad several times, then the turbo went out. He then sold it. 'Read the forum on swapping over to a non-toyota pump, and that sounds like it worked well. I don't know however where I could ever find one and be sure it matched up enough to buy it from somewhere around the globe without seeing it. 'Seemed to take a good bit of mods to make some of them work. I'm trying to move in about 3 weeks for a semester and don't have time to do lots of mods before then. 'May just park the 4Runner and fix it this summer.

You are looking at about $1,000 for a rebuilt one in Japan w/o shipping, taxes and they want the core. Toyota will only sell the seals if you want anything else its a whole new pump or rebuilt.

$2500 aud is only $1950USD :D You must have reversed the conversion

Look for Japan4x4 in the members list and send him a PM. As BJ44 pointed out it will be cheaper there. Others have had there pumps rebuilt in Japan with good results but it takes a while
