I found this while running through endless garbage news links. I've referred to my time in the Kootenay's as my home.
Nelson, Castlegar, Cranbrook, Sandon, Kaslo.... I know most roads, trails and hikes. But this is an amazing blog. I hope you enjoy it.
Perhaps we can find actual factual history about the other places we know, Coalmont area, Nechako area etc.
But this is worth the time, pretty fascinating

I lived in the Kootenays for five years. I loved it there as well. No gates on every logging road for one.

Cool Jon, thanks for the link.

I grew up for most of my childhood in the West Kootenays (Boundary Country). Neat area, and so much history everywhere there.

Thanks for thinking of me! That site is pretty cool. Done a lot of exploring there and plan on returning, possibly this year actually.

I spent 5 months working up there for the Forest Service in Invermere BC. Golden to Canal Flats was my daily playground. I spent my days putting up signs warning of off highway vehicles on the Forrest Service roads, and my nights playing on them. I got paid to check on and explore every Forrest Service roads… study which roads should be decommissioned. Check to see if they were washed out, and checking on repairs.

I wish I could find a job like that. Sick of desk job and living in a city....

Kinda eats at your soul, I grew up in a pretty small town in Ontario. Lived in Vancouver for 13 years Toronto for 2 years, both places wore me down. Mackenzie north of Prince George was 2500 pop, went from TO to that was a bit of a culture shock. Never regretted one minute of that and still friends with a lot of those folks.

I’m over glorifying it… I left out the hand digging post holes 4 feet deep in 4-5” rocks under direct sun. It wasn’t all glamorous, but I sure loved the scenery. It’s what steered me away from a desk job.

I was in Toronto for two years. We planned to stay there a third… until a supervisor recommended me to a colleague in Kelowna and my wife and I pondered the notion for a moment. We realized we hated Toronto, and had been swallowing out true feelings while I was in school. It was a two year program, the only one in North America, and we left almost two years to the day.
Kelowna had a strong draw because of my time in the Kootenays, but Victoria won out because of family. Overall I know it was the right decision, but there are times I wish we’d chosen a different path.

I had the 40 before Toronto, and still have the same one… almost three decades now. :D

Where is that pic? Ugly looking piece of history that. My sister pointed out the old pics of Ainsworth, before
the modernization. I have a photo of a fire hydrant in Sandon from back in 80’s. I thought they were cool.
It was an ironic photo, as the thing had a big leak in it.

hb mine near salmo. most of those buildings are collapsed now. still a lot to see. its kind of weird visiting a place like that where people just walked away from their stuff.

I used to spend a lot of time in Salmo. Almost bought 10 acres there. Nice area.
Lots of places where people just walk away, kinda spooky.
