Got around to getting this '81 BJ40 started today. Alternator, fan and belt fitted during the week. Todfay fitted a new battery crossover cable between the 2 batteries. Then decided it would be a good idea to drain whatever coolant was in there and flush thru before refilling. There wasnt any in it
. These are the things I expect with this old rusted cruiser, many more knocks wait down the pipeline too I'm sure. Yes the hoses turned out to be crusty and worse still when I went to fill up there was water leaking badly from exhaust side of the head gasket area.
Unperturbed by such minor stuff I stuck the key in the ignition and fired, and fired and fired and after probably 15 seconds, she chugged pot by pot into life - dont they sound like tractors, its great. Anyway I'm happy she runs and isnt seized up from water in the bores or whatever. I hand cranked her before starting and she turned easy. Theres no water in the oil so fingers crossed its a new head gasket only.
Oh and the tank was over half full of what must be a good few years old diesel.
