So I decided to open both front axles this weekend. I inspected both the axles and the bushings and did not see any noticeable wear or scoring on either of the bushings or the axles. I think I was taken by the dealer, there were probably guessing, I should ask for a refund.
While I had everything out I repacked the birfields, replaced the wheel bearings (Koyo same as OEM) and checked everyting else, I wish I have had the rotors to replace them then since I had everything out, local dealer did not have them and neither did the local FLAPS.
While looking and the bushings it seems to me that there should not be any wear on the bushings unless they are totally dry or a foreing object gets in there. The outer axle shaft does not ride on the bushings, it looks more like it floats on the bushing, the outer axle engages on the flange.
BTW: This is the third time I do a repack job on the birfields and it only took me six hours to do the whole job, this includes replacing the wheel bearings. The first time I did this job in my FJ60 it took me 2 weekends, the second time I did it to my FZJ80 and it took two days, I feel like and expert now, so if anyone in the Boise area needs helps doing this job I willing to lend a hand. The hardest part is removing the brake calipers and pulling out the old seals.
Thanks,
