hello

I just purchased (a good deal) a set of what I was told were late model FJ40 axles. yes, front is disc, rear has drums, has castle nut on flange and the offset flanges, etc....

However - I was hoping someone could help me identify the year?

Both axles on the 3rd member have:

41111-60011 .....has the Toyota Part number format - however my searches gleaned nothing :-(

thanks for any info!

Castle nuts were done being used to retain companion flanges on pinions prior to 08/69.

Measure the knuckle stud pattern and compare it to the numbers found HERE <---- this is a link

hmm, I thought disc axles were not introduced until late 75? I could be mistaken.

Same with fine spline vs. coarse?

Fine vs. Coarse what, pinions?

Pinions went fine spline in 01/78.

Inner axles/axle side gears in differentials went fine spline in 1968.

Outer axle stub went fine spline in the USA with the disc brake change in 08/75, and is longer than 01/79 outer axle stubs.

Parts are parts bud...anyone could make anything out of a pile of axle parts. Not until you take things apart and verify what you have, will you know for sure.

As far as I see, all the 40-series third member p/ns from 1970 through 1984 start with 41110 - your 41111 is close but I couldnt find anything.

EDIT: Just read Poser's reply, maybe the third might be older than '70?? You're not the only one with that p/n tho: https://forum.ih8mud.com/647174-post21.html Also I kept looking up until later years, even 80 series still use the 41110 block for a third. \

For some reason the pictures are not working in Poser's link, which I am attributing to site upgrades?

Anyhow. I pulled the read pumpkin cover off and there was a number (hard to read) on the ring gear.

It was as follows: 9 x 37 078 2 2? 4

Again, hard to read, so numbers may be off.

Regardless. I looked down into the spider gears at the end of the axles and they are fine spline. Which I guess means late model?

Here are some pictures of the axle:

Here are some pictures of the FRONT axle (obviously).

Thanks for any information!!!

9 x 37 = 4.11 :)

The rear axle shafts being fine spline only means that they are 1968 and later. They are later than what would be stock in a 1967 and earlier 40 series.

What are the month/year on the brake hose rings? 07/76?

Psst!

Pictures are back. :)

Sorry, brake hose rings? I know - stupid question, but I am not sure what you are referring to.

Thanks,

D

Older era Toyota brake hoses have a DOT banana date on them. Those rubber rings around the brake hose in your pictures have “DOT and then 00/00” on them.

New Toyota brake hoses have the year/month imprinted into the hose, indicating when the hose was manufactured.

Look at them and post up what you find.

02/76 on the brake line rubber rings. nothing on the rear axle though. ;-)

The wheel bearing hub and rotor assembly looks like it is correct for that period, as they were used between 08/75-07/80.

I bet if you measure the steering knuckle stud pattern you will find that it is the 11mm, small bolt pattern used until 12/78.

However, with the above stated it would not surprise me to find out that it is a mix-match of parts to get disc brakes.

On your rear axle assembly, you can only really know an approximate period for it based on the rear axle shaft having a race pressed onto the axle shaft, or the race being part of the rear axle shaft.
