I need to get better illumination in the back of the truck. OEM reverse light fairly useless and only good for indicator. I replace the bulb with 15 LED bulbs and it barely improve at all.

Where do you guys install auxiliary backup light for 100 series?
Hella and IPF makes pretty good flood light but I am having problem finding a good place to mount them without drilling the body.

White Night make a very simple one that just install on the hitch but I would be too easy to damage off road. A wireless backup camera seems simpler but it would not help when you need to set up camp at night.

Warn makes a good Trail light for ATV application. It looks pretty small and should be easier to mount. I could not find the exact dimension yet but it looks might fit in place of the rear bumper reflector or on the rear wind deflector.

Does anlybody have better idea? Pictures of your setup would be greatly appreciated.

Augie,
I can't remember if you are running the stock bumper or(?)...FYI: I mounted the rectangular IPF back-up light on my Slee (where the antenna mast mount is located).

I am still running stock bumper.
I wish I could afford slee bumper.

I mounted two rear-facing lights on the trailer-hitch cross-member. Used disposable Pilot Automotive halogens so if they get stolen or broken...could care less.

I had two PIAA 510s on my lame ass bumper bar thingy. :o

That is long gone. I'm looking at mounting them both on the TJM rear bumper in the tire mount area. Hope to do it soon.

is it legal to drive on the highway with uncovered independently controlled rear-facing lights?

Anybody installed one of the White Night systems? I'm interested in doing this, but am not sure what is involved on the LX. Will the fixed mount clear the bumper? Do I need to move the wiring plug?

Thanks.

White night system require 3/4" clearance between the hitch and the bottom of the bumper. There is plenty of clearance for my 99 LC.

I have never heard anybody got pulled over because of the rear facing auxiliary light. White Night system have a button to override reverse switch but you have to do it from the outside. Warn ATV Trail Light are designed to be wired to the reverse switch.

Not sure, but that is definately something that should be checked out. I've heard of people getting pulled over and getting tickets for stuff like this (especially in the People's Republik of Kalifornia).

For this purpose, when I do mine, I plan to wire it into the OEM system anyway, so it won't matter in that case. Basically, tap the OEM wire to switch a dedicated relay for the aux light, and bring the power directly from the battery. I figure I'll only need it while actually reversing (I have a real camplight for other aux lighting purposes). Right now I am leaning toward a TJM rear bumper, which has two cutouts already for rear lamps. I was planning on replacing the right-hand lamp with the aux backup lamp, and the other one with a rear fog lamp (Mercedes G-Wagon style!).

So long as you are not running them while driving forward on a road I can't see it being a problem. Most of the lights recommended are low key and should not be attracting attention on a 100.

If you otherwise look like a drug-running felon then all bets are off. ;) If a cop wants to stop you and has time to follow you around he will find a reason eventually.
