Does anyone know what option code the auxiliary tank is, or if it is even available. 18 gallon main tank is not going to get it done for me. Asked my dealer about this who had no information. Hope this can be ordered from the factory. Thanks.

1) You can't order a Toyota from the factory. All you can do is have the dealer indicate your preference. If the factory decides to build what you want, then your dealer might be able to get it allocated to you.

2) Toyota won't offer the subtank as an option here in the US.

3) Whether you can order the subtank and associated parts from outside the country and then figure out how to install it is an open question. It won't be easy, particularly getting the evaporation collection stuff working.

Your best bet would probably to wait and hope that LRA builds an aftermarket solution and sells it in the US.

I cannot recall Toyota offering a sub tank on anything in the US.

IMO, every Toyota I’ve ever owned has too small a fuel tank. Cars and trucks. And when they squeeze more mileage out of a new model, they shrink the fuel tank to ensure you don’t get satisfactory range.

All of which is being driven by fleet mileage requirements. Less gas in government tests =minute improvement in mileage. Thank your government.

Maybe the Long Range 33 gal 150 series tank can be made to work?

I recommend that you wait until LRA builds a kit for it. Getting the tank to work with the evap system apparently isn’t straightforward.

Thanks everyone--why Toyota made the tank 6 gallons smaller from my LC 200 to the GX 500 is a mystery.

I love more fuel capacity as much as the next guy. But if the new LC gets 23 mpg then it will have a 414 mile range, which is more than the 200 or any previous USDM LC. Even if you reduce that range with mods and off road driving, you have to really try to come up with a realistic route that requires more fuel than that in the US*.

*I can already tell people will be upset by this assertion.

17 gallons isn’t useable

You probably have 12/13 before the gas light comes on and a few gallons for the fuel system. Youre looking at 12-14 useable gallons of fuel.

It would be nice to have 400 range vs 250 and hitting the Gas station weekly.

5 Gallon aux tank. Most vehicles can accept multiple tanks. Many vendors out there below is my personal preference. Super easy to install. Affordable. Might use mine once or twice a year in North America. Helpful around the house for those other gas craving machines like the snowblower and log splitter. I don’t have an aversion to stopping for fuel when an opportunity presents itself. They often have snacks I enjoy and clean restrooms.

Does the remaining fuel turn back to a dinosaur or something when the light comes on? How is this any different than all previous Land Cruisers with a fuel light that comes on with 20% remaining? You can use all the gallons... The range is still greater all else equal.

They all have abysmal range, the 250 less so — it’s the hallmark of the US market Land Cruisers; this is ironic for a vehicle whose core heritage is remote touring and that, with sub tanks and efficient diesels, was spec’d to achieve range outside the US market.

Yes, there are places where more range is required here in the US and in MX.

No, it is not convenient to carry a jerry or two — on the roof? No thanks. Inside the cabin? Sketch. On an after market bumper? There goes ten percent of your paltry payload and three grand. LRA tank? Same story — but maybe now you need that after market bumper too to carry the “convenience” spare that your tank displaced. Now we’re up to four or five grand, and maybe twenty percent of the 250’s paltry payload.

Better solution? Just give the remote touring truck remote touring range from the factory. Totally novel, but…

I don’t think I’ve ever seen such negativity over a new vehicle. Roughly a 400 mile range given the reported MPG. (Ironically the same range as my 80 when stock). Pretty hard to drive much further without stopping to pee. By comparison my Subaru averages about 23mpg around town. 30+ on the HWY. It has a 12 gallon tank.

Sure there are times when more fuel capacity would be nice. But really not that often. Not often enough to warrant constantly caring more weight. Or what ever other compromise that could exist from the overall engineering of the vehicle.

My fuel can joke above aside it’s really the easiest solution for the masses. If you’re regularly running low on fuel in NA you’re either wheeling the most remote areas with authority. Or maybe this isn’t the best vehicle for your needs. But arguing your current Cruiser has more range because the tank is larger is silly based on prior models MPG consumption rates.

That’s simply not our market. We exist, just not in numbers that make providing that vehicle profitable.
