Ok hasn't been an issue bc I never drive at night. But my 92 has no ding sound to tell you the lights are still on and as of now don't shut off automatically. What are they supposed to do? Is there a way to make them shut off auto if they aren't dome that way from Toyota?

Later models (I know '96 and '97) turn off the lights when you open the door. Dunno how hard that'd be to retrofit though.

I had a 91 which didn't have any warning or auto off.

Now I have a 93, it has the auto off when you open the door and the ignition is off or in the accessory position.

I don't mean to be rude, but is it really that hard to remember to turn them off? It's what we all did back when warning buzzers and automatic everything didn't exist.

And if you don't remember, the cost of a new battery will do wonders for your memory.

97 also has an 'auto light' setting that turns on/off lights automatically when ambient darkens/brightens.

Mine doesn't.

Well I have a 92 camry that's my daily driver and it's lights stay on all the time because it was built to turn them off when the door opens. My truck dings at me and my wife's sienna turns them off automatically. It's just odd to me that the base model 92 camry has auto off lights but the tlc didn't from the same year. I was just wondering if something had been disconnected or was broken.

One of the illuminati over at the 3FE yahoo email listserv figured out how to splice in some diodes to make a buzzer when the headlights are left on. If you join the 3FE list and search for "headlight buzzer mod", all will be revealed. ;)

Nope, not NA models.

For those models fitted with lights auto-off when opening driver's door, the most common cause of failure is the dome light switch on the driver's door - if your dome light does not come on when opening the door, start there first. These switches can be opened and cleaned

The 91-92 models didn't come with that from the factory. Most 93-97 models did. My 94 had it and when I rolled the truck, that was one of the things I took to install on my 91 FJ80. Pretty simple to do.

Ok, got around to take pics of 'auto light'. Switches off light @ door open, switches on @ 'dark threshold' e.g. Under tree shade. Truly set and forget. But I rather like to turn things on/off myself ;)

The ' light on' setting on stick switches on beam in all situations, regardless of key out/door open etc
