I'm planning to throw in my Aussie locker this week sometime and I have a question so I know what to expect. Do I have to remove the ring gear to get the cross shaft out? I have had to on some diffs in the past and its not a big deal, just want to know how much time to budget. I searched this forum and in the tech section and couldn't find my answer. This is in reference to the rear diff obviously.

Ring gear stays in place. Only the cross shaft, pinion gears and side gears come out.

OK, I'm going to be doing this Aussie install as well. Mine is a 91 FJ80 though, so this is a semi-float rear. And advice as to what additonal parts I need on hand. I already know to have a new set of thrust washers handy (they are too cheap to not replace, plus it is strongly suggested in the install notes).

I'll have:
Dif oil
thrust washers
what else...

any special tools?

Cork gasket for the rear cover? Telescoping magnetic probe to pick up the thrust washers when you drop them into the bottom of the pumpkin...

principle is the same on all FJ40/55/60/62 and 80 rears....and the Aussie, EZ, and LR are all similar in installation.....the thrust washers are IMO a must, since too much gap will make a TON of noise....

I just put the aussie locker in my 91 fj80 two weeks ago and it was easy as could be it only took a couple of hours .....when I first started driving the 80 after the install I was worried that I broke something because it was loud very loud but after a couple of miles when it got lubed good it got quiet so dont worry at first if its loud. I have put about 400 miles on it since and some light offroading and it works great..you wont be disappointed.

Keep those gears in the rig in case the locker breaks since you're running 36s. I pulled the diff for my LR install. I re-used the thrust washers, since the spacing was in spec. No problems in the last 75k miles.

Use lots of sticky grease when putting it together, makes the job a lot easier.
Unfortunately I didn't know much when I bought my first locker for my 80, and bought the EZ-locker, which lasted only 2 months on stock size tyres and mild offroading!!!

ZA, so because you didn't use sticky grease, your EZ only lasted 2 months? or because you hated the EZ so much, you pulled it out after 2 months?
Oh, and I know what a sticky bun is, what is sticky grease? By using a grease that keeps everything together, the parts do not drop into the pumkin? Is that why?

If you use a sticky grease you can "stick" things together during assembly ie: gluing the pins in and so forth.
