Open it up in front of him and see what happened. It may be something obvious.

I like this idea, he won't have a chance to talk his way out of it if the bolt is missing, or sitting at the bottom of the housing.

I wasn't able to be there when taken apart. Was told all was is spec. and that the Pinion snapped clean as if frozen and dropped. It was in three nice clean peaces and no damage to any other parts. The original pinion shaft was 26 years old. perhaps old and brittle??

MMMMMM...Too bad you couldnt have been there!
Are you gonna just do both the ring and pinion?
Did you go have a look see at the components? Id have to assume there would be other damage to the components if the pin were backing out. I gues that its plausable with the added stress that an old component could let loose like that.
FWIW, mine does NOT buck...It does unload on me, but when I pull into a parking space or something, it just wratchets, even at low speeds.
Did you ever contact Aussie and see what they say? Still sounds kinda fishy.

You are being taken. If everything was in spec it would not have snapped. The ring/pinion does not get brittle. Bottom line is he forgot to put in the pin bolt or did not put it in tight enough.....so the pin slide out which is normal if the bolt is not in and the pin got caught and something had to give.

I am sorry that this happened but but your foot down......print off this thread and give it to him.

I suppose anything is possible but personally I don't buy it. If I ever need service out your way don't direct me to that shop.

The "outward vertical dent" as you called it was made by the pinion shaft coming out because there was NO RETAINING PIN IN IT! It broke because it was jammed against the diff cover and the carrier was still turning. I have seen those shafts get chewed up, but never break. I'm afraid your installer goofed and is trying to cover his butt.

he more than likely left out the bolt or lost it. so ask him to see the bolt.

My pinion shaft is also 26 years old with near 260K miles. It was in great shape when I put the aussie in and is still doing its job 2 years later. You're getting played.

Joel I've got more miles on mine that you and my miles are probably among the most brutal on the board living here in Central America. My Aussie locker has been in for at least 3 years with NO problems. The mechanic screwed up and does not want to admit it!!

I talked to Kurt at Cruiser Outfitters about the issue and was told this is not unusual and has happened with a variety of other lockers including the Aussie's. Just unfortunate that I happened to be one of the few who had to deal with results out of the masses. The locker was installed per spec. and is in fine shape. However the carrier needed to be replaced due to slight elongation as to where the pinion shaft drops in. I've found no fault in the install and still have total faith in my tech.'s work. So what now, I decided to pull the Aussie and return the 60 to stock till i can afford selectable lockers (ARB). My Girl uses the 60 as a daily round town rig durning the week so I need lockers that can perform well both on and off road. Figured I'd just put the Aussie in the back end of my 40. Thanks to all who gave there advise and thoughts. up dates will fallow. Thanks again. Cosmo

So what you're saying is that the carrier is bad? That should be easy to find, and it's not so hard to replace, I just did that a few months back, mine had hogged out a bit where the side gears fit into it. Sorry for your troubles.

Oh, I know that Charles! - I'm pretty sure we're on the same page.

Any pictures of the carnage?

fortunately I save any thing cruiser related so as luck would have it I had an extra carrier, pinion shaft and retaining pin on the shelf. Just a bit more labor:frown:
I got it back yesterday just after the first wave of a week long snow storm. I forgot how well they perform even with out lockers.
