well bearing has been changed, thankfully a hoist and gearbox jack make the whole job a lot easier. here are some pics just for fun.

and no more squealing gear changes! i will try and keep out of deep muddy puddles as i think this might the reason for it failing, but then again i have no idea what condition it was in when i bought the car.

the only problem with getting the car on the hoist is you see other problems!

here is the condition of some of the leaf spring bushes... they appear to be polyurethane ones that have given up so will replace with a full rubber kit as i will prefer reduced NVH.

normally on any car i have owned i rotate the tyres every 10k km and I get the car up on 4 x jackstands to do the rotation. whilst it is up i just lay under there and look at suspension bushes etc and for leaks.

since i do not care about the tires on this car as they are due for replacement soon, this inspection has not been done for a while and hence i have slipped on the bushes issue! bit dissapointed as i don't want it to get this bad ever for safety reasons.

G'Day Fella's,

350HJ75 doing that gearbox work any other way, has good warts on it!
Good to see you were able to identify the issues, with the damaged suspension bushes.
Maintenance on these vehicles, is an almost never ending job at times................... but I enjoy doing, most of it.

D'oh!

bushes done in the front end only so far, looking better and a slightly softer ride which Is noticeable.

it was a tougher job than I thought as I left the springs connected to the diff so wrangling the whole lot by myself was tricky, I might remove the springs from the diff for the rear so I can deal with them individually.

also in the same session I changed out the 'noisy' turbo for an identical replacement I bought not long ago.
well turns out the second turbo sounds exactly the same. :meh: well it was worth the experiment at least and I have a known working turbo as a spare in the shed now. Installed a turbo blanket on the new turbo from thermal zero too.

I will order a new bonnet liner to help with the noise levels as there is currently nothing there at all.

Hey mate.

Just got some decent internet and read the whole thread. Great work and well done on getting it turbo'd! :) I'd really love that arduino setup, gotta love data logging!

Where'd you get the stuff to make the door cards? I really need to do the same with my Sierra.

got around to doing the rear bushes, decided to separate the springs from the diff this time. Much much easier this way which is a lesson learnt.

glad i replaced these two! they just fell out like that

Yikes! and yes indeed.
Given this 350, do you reckon the greasable points on the bushes, are worth having?

Regards
Homer

if you have poly type bushes and grease them regularly it might be worth it. I greased them once when i bought the car 4 years ago so lack of grease might have made them fail??

i have cleaned everything and kept it dry for the rubber bushes and i don't intend on greasing them.

i have done a decent bit of rocky/flexy off roading so this will not help the life of the bushes either i think.

I had this happen on a 351 years ago and it was because the clutch wasnt lined up using a dummy pinion so it pulls on one side of the bearing. Only squealed when pushing the clutch pedal. Havent see it for years as most cars I have worked on in recent years have bushings, not a bearing

yeah it is amazing how much stuff you learn from doing your own work on cars, then the knowledge transfers to other future models sometimes!

yesterday i got new road tyres (as i have muddies for offroad), I decided to check the date on the BF Goodrich all terrains that are on there and they were manufactured in 2001! 17 years old is a bit much for me! plus the spare i had was from 1991! I also wanted to go up to 33 inch tyres for lower highway revs. Having 15 inch stock rims which are well out of fashion there were only two manufacturers who made 33x10.5R15 tyres and that was maxxis and BF Goodrich. I went with the maxxis AT980 because of the price as i was getting all 5 done.

RPM is now 2600 @ 110km/h which is much more relaxed and the turbo provides enough power to sustain that easy on the highway.

Also yesterday a set of shocks from Bilstein arrived so i spent this morning installing those.

I have only done a little bit of driving so far but i am very impressed, it has not taken away from the fact that the car is a SWB leaf sprung vehicle so it wont ride like a merc but the shocks certainly take a lot of the harshness out of the bumps. as i do 120km daily to work and back @ 100km/h on a country highway i am looking forward to a less bouncy ride to work.

a few minor things done on the car recently, but the little things all help keep it working well.

replaced the leaking locking type fuel cap with a genuine non-locking type, hopefully this will stop the rear quarter being covered in diesel all the time.

Installed a hood liner from Tru-fit, really nice piece that came with clips and has made a significant reduction of 3B engine/turbo noise in the cabin. I can actually hear the exhaust now!

and purchased a genuine 'shock absorber' for the mirror (little rubber piece that goes between the mirror and windscreen) as the rattle was starting to get at me!

Well it has been a while since posting on here but have not had much to do due to the old girl running sweetly the last few months.

The problem is the family has expanded to 5 in that same time so the cruiser has been replaced by a 150 Prado.

So it is up for sale at the moment, i would love to keep it especially with all the work done but i cant justify having that many cars! so it wont be going urgently or for super cheap as i am hoping secretly that it wont sell :)

if anyone in on here is interested just send me a PM.
