What are my options for getting crawler gears in my '91 FJ80? Don't have lockers, plan to put J-springs + 15mm spacers + 35x17.50s on it, so re-gearing will be in order, but I'd rather do the ratio lowering via the transfercase since I may end up putting the stock tires back on when I pass it down to my little cousin.

I mention the Atlas II because you can get a very nice package from them with fairly good low range, and it is drop-in for most trucks. Problem is the price tag, and lack of people having these in their 80s.

I should know this and don't feel like looking it up, but what is the low range on the t-case in an 80?

I have a japanese artical which I think talks about installing lower(from some other Cruiser) stock gears(it has the part #'s) in the t-case of an 80, but I can't read the damn thing.

They are 2.48:1, the 80 has the lowest gearing in the t-case of any Cruiser. Probably to make up for the 2.95:1 in the tranny.

alkaline,
from what I remember there is no atlas series II transfer case available for the 80 series trucks. I looked into this breifly when I first bought my truck and from what I recall the series II is for a centered rear axle not for an offset rear (like on your truck) the crawler box on slees site is your only option and has had mixed reviews on wether it was worth it. ......

Alkaline,

The only other way to get crawler gears is to change transmission / transfer case. Since you have the 3FE, there are a fair amount of adapters. You will loose the fulltime 4WD of the FJ80, and I'm sure you have to change the gas tank, and possibly the floor pan / tunnel.

Lot-O-work, but another option

The crawler box from Marks require a 2" body lift and you have to modify the gas tank. The good news is that it sits on the side of the transfer case and does not change the driveshafts.

I have some problems with mine (very early model) jumping out of gear. Mark is sending new internal parts and we will probably fix it next month. However when it does not jump out of gear, it is awsome.

Better late than never, maybe? ;)

Let me know if I can help with my limited English/Japaense capabilities. :D

I wasn't 100% about the atlas, since it was "drop-in" for a whole lot of trucks, I figured they had one for the 80 series. About the price issue, really isn't a true issue. I'm still sitting on the payout from the 99 f-250 w/ lift and other goodies I sold, spending the money on the cruiser, lift, tires, etc. About the width of the 35's, I plan to do a little customizing to get some nice and wide wheel spacers, and a good but of trimming/replacing w/ rubber "fenders".

Now back on subject, to install the slee offroad or the klunev kits, what kind of modifications am I goin to face? Massive amounts of re-wroking and re-manufacturing of components, or a little cut here and a little weld there?
