Why, when the parts guy goes into the system to find the part(s) does he type (what seems) a doctoral thesis into the computer? I mean, this dude typed steady for 2-3 minutes.

Just a place to ask Beno stuff.

Push back or no?

I don't understand the question....

....you went to a dealership and a dealership is going to stealership your info.

You'll be getting a call in the next 24 hours to talk about a trade-in value for your 4Runner and some fantastic, post 4th of July sales on 2018 aging inventory.

DMS's (Dealer Management Systems) have all different types of flavors. The two mains ones are ADP and Reynolds and Reynolds. They have both web-based/point and click GUI's and then they have the old school type-every-thing-out UI's. The former are way more expensive and small dealerships generally wait as long as possible to convert from the latter. Also, there are emulation programs that allow old school part guys who like typing everything out to emulate the type systems in the web-based systems.

That said, you could have just been dealing with a moron who was writing an email to someone pretending to assist you-- especially if you are dealing with a 300K s*** box the guy could care less about.

And to what John and Matt said previously, absolutely. 99% of dealer parts department personnel are box kickers. They could care less about the walk-in customer. They want the "gravy" as it's called in the car business that happens over the back counter to the service department.

You know how parts departments are able to give 33% off MSRP at places like toyotablahblahblah.com?

They charge stupid amounts of money to the service department customers ("stealerships") and can easily hide the discounts they give to a small internet clientele in accounting. And most mid-to-large parts departments have million dollar per year marketing budgets they can use however they want.

Also, most parts department use what are called "escalators"-- they basically put in parameters to up the list price of parts and then give you a discount off the bumped up (escalated) pricing. So it "seems" like a great deal. It's just a classic bait and switch.

Most car dealerships, in fact (especially mom and pop operations or what are called "single points") are just big money washing machines for the owners.

Hope that helps.

I have a question for @beno
WharfRat calling from Cotton Land..... I have a 86 HJ60 Canadian diesel.
I saw your thread about looking for a hard to find alternator for your diesel. That got me thinking about a simple breakdown becoming a major problem because of rare parts availability in the US.
What spare parts should I consider keeping in the cruiser for cross country drives?

Anything you cannot get from your local Toyota dealer.

Ok, I’m stumped on this one. Any help in identifying ? Doesn’t look like anything in any 60 diagram and has been in my spares box for almost two decades. I’m curious what the application is.
