Consider youself lucky! (I KNOW you are lucky . . . OBX last week, NY Salmon next week . . . you are da'man!)
My '82 and '89 both have NC inspections, but our '68 Mustang is exempt. You may wish to get the inspections, inasmuch as the fines are now in the hundreds. If you miss an inspection on a post '96 vehicle, you won't need to wait to get pulled, you will get a ticket in the mail. (Several hundred dollars!!) Those emissions/inspection stickers are electronically recorded, while the yellow safety inspections don't appear to be.
You may have missed getting pulled on the 40s inasmuch as most people think 40s are older than they actually are, including cops.
While I am not an advocate of spending money, you may want to get any post-72 40s inspected inasmuch as it is probable cause to pull you over, and who knows what will be found at that point . . . "Sir, are those Cuban?"
