I want a Land cruiser so bad. I would love an FJ-60 for camping and such. BUT all of the ones I see for sale have at least 200,000miles on them. I found one that has 300000 miles on it. I know it all depends on how well it was taken care of. But is it reall worth getting one with so many miles on it? Thanks all.
Like you said... miles matter little I think.
If they have been taken care of of then they go a long way.
I got mine with 178k and the engine went out at 190 something...
Personally I think they are a luxury to drive now days and a big commitment...!!!
If the miles are a concern look at the FZJ80's. Plenty of them out there well under 200,000. I agree if you can wrench and have the time and money to invest back in the truck then take some time to look for one in good condition with lower miles.
Miles are miles and they certainly do matter. A rotating device has a limited life. The 2F is certainly much stronger than most, but at 300k, unless some work has been done, you'll be the one doing it. The newest FJ60 is 21 years old. There are lower mile trucks out there, but patience and the ability to act instantly is required. I'd wait for a lower mileage 60, or budget for engine work.
If you have to ask then I have to say NO. For most it's love at first sight. If you are not totally committed to the idea, then it may be the wrong truck for you. Yes, its an old truck with a ton of miles and most probably RUST. It will do weird things that will drive you nuts. The beauty is in their simplicity and utility. It will take work and some $$$ to get an old and most likely neglected truck to a point where it will be a fun, useful, and reliable vehicle.
After owning ten 60 and 62s.I say yes. I have owned about every make of car. They are no more work and much less than the Volvo I bought new! No one said can I buy your vOLVO! They still want my cruisers even with the price of gas and they are over 20 years old!
It's my favorite Land Cruiser of the 3 I own. It combines the robustness of a traditional Land Cruiser, with the usefulness of a wagon body. They are great trucks and highly recommended. They can go a long way if taken care of, mine runs like new at 220K miles, and is weirdly reliable. Just keep up the PM and it will keep serving you for years. I do still use it as my primary driver when I drive.
300K would be a lot, unless you had owned it the whole time. Look for a 150K mile truck, which will still need a bit of TLC, but will have lots of useful life left in it.
You all have good points. But I already have a 62 Unimog. Not that it breaks down alot. I just dont need something else to spend money on. Maybe I will look for an 80. I just love the ide of the manual trnny i the 60. Oh well thanks all.
BTW, the 83 JF60 I just bought...and still dont have...has 260k miles on it. Out of all the stupid crappy problems it has, the engine is STRONG! Strong like bull. Tatonka.
160 on all cylinders. On a 2F this should last me a few hundred thousand more

I tore down my 2F when it had 235k on the clock. It still had great compression, great oil pressure and ran very well. I thought I would try to squeeze more poop out of it, so out it came. Even at that milage, the bearings all looked fabulous! I have no doubt at all that it would have gone 400k if I'd left in in. At this point, my rig has 350K on it and it was a daily driver untill about two weeks ago. Easy to work on, virtually bomb proof, easy to modify. Best vehicle I ever owned. I sold my BMW 540i recently to remedy the household budget. The Land Cruiser was never an option. It was staying, and will stay untill it breaks in two or I'm pushing up dasies somewhere.
I bought my FJ60 just recently, from someone in San Jose, CA, for $2300 and it has 130K miles. Someone else posted here in the past few days about an 87 FJ60 they found in Salinas CA for $1800 with less milage. If you keep an eye on the Bay Area Craigslist, I'm sure you'll find a low mileage FJ60 for a decent price. With gas prices where they are, a lot of people are getting rid of them.
my 2f had something like 240k before i swapped it out. It was running well enough for us to take a 2k mile trip right before i pulled it. either plan on learing how to amintain the thing, or have the money to pay somebody else. I have ended up rebuilding everything on mine. Sure it would have run a long time, but you'll end up wanting to take care of the worn out bits.
