Hey guys,
I am finally getting to my rear end rebuild. The front went together just fine, although we used the factory open differential. We are now on the rear end. Let me remind you that this is a 5.29 gear install with ARB locker into a 1997 land cruiser rear differential. We are at the point of checking ring gear backlash. We have now put a total of 0.082" of shim spacers under the inner pinion race. When we get the backlash to the recommended measurement (~0.008" of backlash), the ring gear hits the casing.
We shouldn't have to do any shaving to the casing on a 97 rear end with the full float, right? At what point do we stop adding shims under the inner race and switch to a larger washer (shim) on the drive pinion itself? Also, do you recommend we stay with the factory crush sleeve or move to a solid pinion spacer? Please advise.
Thanks
