Anything else to try before replacing ECM? Help in northern New Mexico?

I hate to beat a dead horse, did you meter all 3 of the fusible links? When my harness went (on top of a mountain), it blew one of the links two were good.

They are good. Everything is getting 12V power just fine. The ECM is getting 12V at all input wires when the ignition in on. It's the VCC 5V output to the TP and VAF that isn't outputting 5V. Or it is grounding out somewhere. But the VCC line only goes to those 2 components, so at least I know where to look. I'm going to unplug the sensors and recheck the 5V output. I'm hoping that the check light comes back on and ECM starts outputting again, then at least I can be sure its wires or compnonents and not the ECM. Electrical suuuuuuuuuucccccccckkkkkksssss!

Yea!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks Landtank!!!!!!!

ECM SEEMS to be fine. I unplugged the TP and VAF and my check light came back on!!! Then plugged in the TP and check light still on, then VAF and it all went bad, no check light. So I checked voltage on the VCC and with the VAF unplugged, I had 5 good volts at the ECM and at the VAF plug. Once I plugged in the VAF, the voltage went out, both at the ECM and at the VAF plug. So I started doing ohm checks on the VCC line. With the ECM unplugged, VAF unplugged, and TP plugged in the resistance in the VCC line was about 3K ohms, normal. I then plugged in the VAF and the resistance went totally haywire. This indicates that the VAF went bad and has grounded out the VCC line inside the VAF somewhere. So I am now searching local yards for used VAF.
Does anyone know if the VAF on the LC was used on any other Yota's?????? It's hard to find LC's here in New Mexico.

Thanks, that is sweet!
That is about an hour down the road. If they're there, I should be back on the road tonight!!!!!!!!!!!

Glad I could help. Looks like you found your short. I personally would can opener that bad boy up and try and fix it. It's probably a chaffed wire to a metal surface. Those things are about as complicated as a slot car speed controller.

Might as well, its shot anyway. Better than a 4 hour round trip out to Farmington to pick a used one up!

edit: My FSM is iffy. The VAF resistance chart show VS - E2 twice. So I did not know what VC - E2 should have been until I opened my Hanyes manual which actually had the correct chart. If I had known what VC-E2 was supposed to be I would have found the problem last weekend!

Went ahead and picked up a used VAF, works perfect, the beast is back on the road!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Congrats dude, you deserve a nice reward for powering your way through the electrical troubleshooting steps!

Hopefully we'll meet up some day on the trail.

Hey, I'll PM you the next time I plan a little wheeling adventure. How's your rig set up? Lift and tires? There's some great stuff between ABQ + SF. From mild to hold on to your shorts!

Landtank is the man.

X2...

congradulations, I know first hand what a PITA electrical grimlins are to track down. I'm gratefull for this site and the people on it for making it possible to hunt down stuff like this !

Thanks

sent you an email.

Thanks guys but this is what I do for a living and don't discount the excellent work that MountainBum did.

I work with professionals that wouldn't have gotten as far as he did in diagnosing this thing with his VOM.

nicely done!!

I think I have a similar issue with my '97 lx450. The shop can't figure it out and wants to get an ECM for it. What is a VAF and TP that you're referring to and what plug is it on the output of the ECM? Thanks,

Chris

The 95-97 have a MAF, typical Mass Air Flow Sensor with a different ECM set up, not the VAF. The TP is the Throttle Position Sensor. You'll need the wiring diagrams for a 97 to get the right ECM connections.

I'm going through exactly the same thing right now. Unplug my VAF, and my CEL comes back on... I may just have to rip the top off tonight...
