I swear the Keyless Entry in our 98 LC is the worst I have ever seen, you basically have to be at the car before it will do anything with the fob. A battery replacement does absolutely nothing...anyone else have this issue? Fixes?

nope. If it does start to happen a fresh battery fixes it. Maybe you have the "special" keyless entry.

change the battery out and then try. if it doesnt fix, than it sucks.

mine can reach across a parking lot.... ok ok like 5 or 6 spots. even with a new battery mine aint that great.

my homelink can, if timed right, open, close and reopen my garage before i even get close enough to pull in. I dont need a long range keyfob, its not like I have remote start.

Rerouting the antenna will help, search the forum, it has been discussed before.

My key fob has excellent range. I can lock/unlock the car from inside the restaurant about 150' away.

My wife's 03's range = 50 yards, easy.
My own 99's range = 5 feet, barely (with a fresh battery).

I'm solidly on the "the range sucks" category, and a new battery does nothing.

Mr. T is improving! I have been amazed at times with mine and the range. Across the lot, over the cars, through the store window.....Nothing but range...

Is the range issue cause from the keys performance or the location of the receiver in the truck?
Sounds like the newer trucks have better range, could one buy a "newer" key and reprogram it?

I would not even bother using the remote key. as mentioned the range is terrible and the keys do not hold up. the key on my 98 and the key on my mom's 99 have started to split in two. i just use they valet key. No hastles.

Short answer is no. Long answer is Probably. How's that for clear? :p

The newer keys have a different style transponder inside, this transponder communicates with the ECU to allow your truck to operate. So one would have to fit a newer ECU that matched the key you wanted to use... of course there are a few issues associated with swapping your ECU to a unit that was not stock. I know people who have successfully done this type of swap (for performance, not a key ) Personally I would not swap an ECU for greater key range, but if you do post up

Judging from the replies in this thread, it seems like the worst keyless performance was on the 98-99 models (as in only work at point blank range up to 5-10 ft away). The 2000 models got a different keyless control unit (different part number by 1 digit). Wiring looks to be identical between the two units.

Wondering if it would be worth it to upgrade to a 2000 model keyless receiver. Any 2000 model owners care to report your range? The only reply I saw in this thread from a 2000 year model owner was 2000UZJ, and his range sounds a lot better than my '99. I'm considering picking up a used 2000 model keyless receiver and trying it, but it would be nice to have some more feedback first.

Since posting this I bought my 00 LX. And while the batteries may be getting a little old I only think it is marginally better than the one in our LC.
