Anyones Keyless Entry Suck?

My LX key split (it's got the key and the fob together in one unit). A bit of superglue, and its back together!

Since posting this I bought my 00 LX. And while the batteries may be getting a little old I only think it is marginally better than the one in our LC.

Thanks for the feedback. Doesn't sound too promising so far. I was hoping Toyota made an upgrade to the unit since it had a new part number, but perhaps not.

i read about this in the 80 section. the easiest thing to do is find the antenna wire for the receiver and extend it to a better location......the longer it is, the better it will pick up the signal. The only problem is i dont know where the receiver is:rolleyes:

Thanks for the idea, in theory it should help on the 100. Problem seems to be the difference in the style of antenna, as far as I can tell ours are internal to the keyless receiver/control unit. Still might be feasible if you could open up the receiver and identify the "antenna" component on the circuit board, might be able to solder an external lead onto it, who knows. Need to look inside the unit and see what's there I guess.

my 98 keyless is junk. I manually unlock with the key 100% of the time now. even after fresh battery. I'm going aftermarket. problem solved. i've already glued my transponder to my ignition behind the dash so my cheapo keys start the truck.

Judging from the replies in this thread, it seems like the worst keyless performance was on the 98-99 models (as in only work at point blank range up to 5-10 ft away).

Had a 98 and the keyless range was as you'd expect, halfway across a parking lot... Have a 99 now and it works best if you're in the truck, i.e. you have to be able to touch the truck to be in range. Wife still uses it but I just carry a plain old chipped key with no buttons.

My '99 is not that bad. Can lock it from inside the garage with the doors closed [truck outside], and maybe 50' or so parking lot line of sight. If you don't mind looking like a doofus, try touching the key blade to your chin while pressing the button. It substantially increases effective range.

I just tore out my center console and removed both my front seats looking for my keyless entry receiver. No dice. Is it located under the dash somewhere? ECU? Under the hood? Anyone? CDAN? Someone's gotta know where that thing is located. :bang:

Bringing this one back from the dead... I have a 98 and have the same issue with key range. Very annoying. Anyone have any success on modifying the receiver on their 100s? Sorry if this has been discussed more recently, I did a search and couldn't find anything else.

As noted above, touch the metal part of the key to your chin when pushing the button. It definitely increases range. I've been doing it in my '99 for the past 16 years.

Not much to add. I have owned 2 99s. Key range sucked on both. Bought a new remote key from Toyota for my current rig and had it programmed by the dealer. No improvement so don't waste your $250 on that idea. (My old key was broke and worn so I was only half pissed.)

:-) What a thread revival. What sucks is that you can open your garage door some hundreds feet away whereas you cannot with your key fob.

The opposite is for both of my newer vehicles.

Exactly... I have scoured the FSM and the forum threads looking for where the Darn'd things located but have had no luck. Anyone else have some info i may have missed?

(Let's not forget... the LC and LX both have a 30 second "re-lock" feature. If you unlock the truck from too far away, you might have to break into a dead sprint to get to the truck before it re-locks itself.)

Look, I'm just glad I got both original fobbed keys after 3 owners and 15 years.... :D

... and while I don't know if they'll work across a football field, they do just fine locking and unlocking from a convenient distance... :)
