Anyone use BFG ATs as a winter tire?

My experience is that they are a superb snow tire. Don't know about the newest variants. If you want to wheel with them in rocks however, be advised that they have a well-known sidewall weakness issue (read that they tear easily). Again, new variants may have addressed this issue. YMMV.

I haven't had any sidewall issues with mine, but the rocks I wheel in is a lot of sandstone and granite which isn't as sharp as the stuff on trails in places like S. Dakota for example. So if you wheel in sharp rocks, it's probably worth getting something with a strong sidewall. But back to your question about snow, I think you'll be happy with the BFGs.

yeah i am thinking about picking up a set just for winters.
i figure they last better than winters too.

If you are just using them as winter tires, I think there would be better options out there for a dedicated winter tread pattern. For year round use the BFG AT is a good tire, but if you're going to be switching tires/rims for winter there are definitely better choices out there IMO.

BFG AT's will seem like a great snow tire for people who have run highway oriented all season AT's, because you are picking up decent some lug spacing without having big lugs.

They freeze, and badly, at low temps. I have been out moving through deeper snow easily at near freezing temps and virtually stuck as temps tanked in the evening in otherwise the exact same conditions.

If you have run a tire that is truly exceptional in on and offroad snow conditions with a compound that doesn't freeze up, you'll know how mediocre BFG AT's are.

Personally, I would buy Revos or Terra Grapplers every day of the week over the BFG's if I wanted an AT, but that doesn't mean you won't love BFG AT's and go skiing every weekend with nary a slip.

Sorry to hi-jack(kind of) but how about BFG MT KM2's on the ice and snow?

Siping would need to be done I would think with those big open jugs? Wondering if they would be a good mix of aggressive, yet still reasonably decent on ice if siped? Or is their compound just as hard as the AT's?

I have 285/75/16 "E" and I run them year round.... never would complain... only reason I'd buy a different tire would be to try something, but I would have a hard time since these last so long!! this will be my 3rd winter, and my tires show barely any signs of wear!!

I was told by a BFG rep a while back that the KM2s and the ATs use the same rubber compound. Whether or not that is actually the case, I'm not 100% certain. The BFG Krawlers however are a different story with a MUCH softer compound.

  1. I do not believe that 33x9.5x15 are available anymore in the AT's, only 33x10.5x15.
  2. I run BFG At's as a winter/street tyre but there are lots of other options I would go with before the BFG AT's if I was buying NOW (GY Silent Armour, Duratrac, Nokian Vativa, Dunlop Radial Rover RT etc. If you really want a taller, skinny tyre I would be looking at 235/85/16 and 255/85/16 as there are a huge amount of options in these sizes compared to 15's in both the year round AT and dedicated snow/ice flavour.

I live outside of Vail, CO. and have used BFG AT's on a cherokee and a Pathfinder. I think they perfom nearly as well as a dedicated snow tire, and certainly to the point that the extra cost of the snow tires isn't warranted. I have had them pull out stuck 3/4 ton trucks with a snowmobile trailer in 20" of powder and always felt comfortable with them on ice, slush, snowpack. Plus they wear like iron. I did just switch to General Grabber AT2's on our Titan and put studs in them. So far so good and (only one little snow/ice storm) but they seem to be the BFG's equal at least. We'll see how they do in the deep stuff and wear, but it is tough to beat the price.
