Just want to know of anyone in the NW thats undercoating their truck to prevent rust.

Are there other rust proof ideas out there?

I bought my truck from california....and live in calgary alberta... lots of snow, slush.....

any ideas for preventive maintenance....

Undercoating? bedliner?.... pics would help too.

thanks, colin

Great question - I'm curious too as a preventive measure.

My Grey one is undercoated with this flaky brown stuff and this goopy greasy black stuff. One on top of the other sometimes.

i use krown

whats krown?

Sorry I'm in the NE, I have used POR15 this product really works :) However, i have just place an order of Durabak paint for the wheel wells and to paint my frenders. POR15 is great looking on your axels, prob the best looking thing on my rig :o

I just go under and wipe everything down with oil--everything.

A couple times a winter and you are golden. Cheap too.

I wanted to undercoat mine, but I read somewhere that after the vehicle has been used it is not a good idea to undercoat. Reason is driving on roads that have been salted or you might have rust around the frame. You don't want to cover this stuff with undercoating. It just speeds up the rust.
On the other hand, if you sand blast the frame....
Por15 is a rust inhibitor but does it undercoat?

Probably depends on one's defination of undercoating. I think of undercoating as being a tar like substance that both seals and retards rust/corrrosion. POR15 surely is not a tar like material but if properly applied I think it will keep rust at bay. I POR15 the underside of my Tundra a couple years back but I just painted it on without preparing the metal. The first winter it held up but then started to peel off. This past summer I stripped everything down, prep'ed the frame, skids, sliders, axles etc and applied 3 coats of POR15 and a coat of enamel rust preventor over the top and everything looks great after being on roads heavily treated with salt or whatever is used to cause vehicle cancer. I'm thinking my undercarriage should be corrosion free for a long time and the only touch up that will be needed is the scrapes obtained off-road and I plan on dealing with that in a timely manner. It's not cheap by any means (couple three hundred for everything) but if it will keep the undercarriage looking like a Kalifor vehicle it'll be worth it. It's a two or three day process as the first day is cleaning everything up and preparing (2 guys) - second day is applying the POR15 and then leave it sit for a full day or two and spend another day putting on the top coat for good measure.

7P's only time will tell. I talk to mechanics ( the old guys) and I'm told they poured transmission fluid around the door frames, etc... Por 15 is good for rust removal as it hardens of the rusted metal. 3 coats might just do it if you waited for each of them to dry before applying the next.

i use gear oil with high pressure with a spray gun with the gun on full spray.looks like s*** but where i come they use alot of salt:frown:

You actually want the surface to be rusted to use POR15. It chemically bonds with the rust and then the resulting surface is rust-proof and very hard. So...if you have a rusty undercarriage, great choice. On bare metal, you need to prep well, which will be difficult for any application.

If you already have rust first use a rust converter like POR15, then paint with the new Rustoleum product for frame rust coating. Then just wash it off often when you have salt on the road. Then every spring get under your truck and treat any new rust spots using the same procedure. Your ruck will remain rust free for as long as you own it.

I use Krown as well... hope it does a better job of the interior panels than the undercarriage...under the vehicle it is not a pleasant sight with the rust flaking pretty well everywhere!

1997 LX450 (Southern Ontario) Krown done annually for last 4 years..

No rust at all:) Take lots of time, prep real good and POR15, Done. There's so much salt on the roads here our local pond is like the dead sea:beer:

I talked to the factory guy on applying multi-coats and he advised to wait until it's tacky to the touch and then apply another coat etc.

Good info!

Calgary........You have a Princess Auto no doubt.
Have you ever heard of "fluid film" great under coating that contains lanolin.
At P. Auto I found a Lloyds product called AD3000 contains lanolin and is about half the price of fluid film.
Run down to Princess Auto and read the back of the spray can.
Takes about 2 cans to do the underbelly once a year.
Good for battery posts too.
While your there get a can of Lloyds "moovit" this is the best penetrating nut and bolt loosener I have ever used, foams on, sit for a day and undo it........every time.
