So I stopped by the local Trader Joe's last night on the way home and this Trade Show princess was in the parking lot. I checked it over and of course it was absolutely spotless. I shoot these pics thinking maybe I'll find the owner living locally and invite them out to wheel. As I'm doing this, the driver comes out. I say "Hey, is this your truck?" His reply was "No, it's my magazine's truck, I'm just driving it.". I said it's too bad it's so blinged out and not really following the credo of "if you build it wheel it". He snapped back quickly that "Oh, it's been on a lot of trails." Now he's got me engaged, so I say, like what trails, some fire roads? The sliders, front and rear bumpers, and pretty much the entire underside are as pristine as a baby's ass and under 40 coats of armorall - ready for a photo shoot. He says Hell's Revenge. Just when I think I want to keep after him, I realize it's hopeless. So sorry if this offends any FJC folks, I've wheeled with two of them that were really capable and fun and the owner's were great and actually wheeled what they had built up.

Well that's definitely the new WARN bumper on there. I hate those step type rock rails... That Cruiser hasn't see one spec of trail mud I am sure.

Wow.. pretty harsh man.

Maybe the thing has been wheeled pretty hard, and is just taken care of and got cleaned up!?

Ha ha, I love it when you ask somebody where they have wheeled and the only response is Hell's Revenge. It would have been better if he had said Lion's Back, cuz we all know how hardcore that "obstacle" is.

Then again, that FJC seems more trailworthy than a certain turboed, 37" tire shod, 40th anniversary FZJ80 I know.

Well there is only one way to test your theory- go follow Mike on trail sometime. Post results back here.

Quick question. Why not worry about wheeling your own rig instead of worrying about someone you don't know wheeling there's? There are plenty of FJCs out on the trail "living your credo" without having to give this guy a hard time, dontcha think? If you challenged me like that I'd tell you to f-off instead of trying to defend myself. There's just too many douche-bags in the world today.

Wow. Pretty strong reaction so I guess I hit too close to home for you

Maybe you should learn to read for comprehension. Try re-reading my post, but not at the level of a 5 year old. I was attempting to meet someone I thought lived in my community, had a Toyota 4WD and had put a lot of accessories on it that would indicate it would be taken off road. I'm not, and wasn't worrying about wheeling my own rig or if someone was wheeling theirs (check your spelling since you refer to a place, "there").

There are plenty of FJCs out on the trail "living your credo" without having to give this guy a hard time, dontcha think?
Again, try reading what was written and not what your tender emotions interpret. You misquote me, indicating that it wasn't "living your credo". This is not "my" credo, simply one that has been expressed by hundreds of people that scratch their heads when they see a clown that dumps thousands of dollars into an off road truck in off road accessories, making it look a certain way as if they will, at a moment's notice, shoot over to the Hammers or Rubicon. It sounds a lot like you are overly sensitive to this. Talk to your therapist and justify why you own your truck and why you feel threatened.

If you challenged me like that I'd tell you to f-off instead of trying to defend myself.
That's your prerogative and I can tell you are friendly person that loves to off road.

There's just too many douche-bags in the world today.

I couldn't agree with you more, thanks for standing up and identifying yourself.

I hate to say it Mike but remember how many 80's owners had the same stance not too long ago... Only in the last year has it become fashionable to actually off-road your 80…. The rig is just too new on the trail to have a real group of wheelers behind the steering wheels. Its “bling bling” until its 10yrs old, then it's ok to scratch the paint. I would have to say "most" who own FJ's are not wheeling the rigs as they could or should be to really get the use of the rig. I'm sure I will get jumped all over for saying that as "most FJ drivers” but then again “most” are not on IH8MUD......... So before you bash... read..... and comprehend people.

SOME FJ Drivers Suck!!

Seems some have the same reaction to all fellow brethren.........

I didn't buy it for its social potential. I bought it to wheel it. Other than that I just want to be left alone. :)

Can't we all just get along........ sheesh.....

I did. Wasn't trying to ruffle any feathers, just giving Mike a hard time. As far as results go..........we all finished the trail. Some needed a strap, some needed driveshaft bolts. Mike gets the award for taking the hardest lines and making it look easy.

WOW!

Just popped in to look around, as my sister is looking at getting an FJC. Coming from the very mild and tame 80's section, I feel like I just clicked onto a different site. However, I do look like to here a good "douche bag" comment every so often. I think it makes sense that people aren't wheeling their BRAND NEW CARS! If i had 35k to spend on a trail rig, I'd be a happy man. The same goes for the off-handed reamark about 80's. If I had 60k to spend on a trail rig, I'd be an even happeir man. At some point these vehicles become cost effective to put on the trail and beat up. In 5 years *their* will be many more FJC on the trail, with a good deal of rash, for sale here on mud, and more people participating in the FJC section of mud. I'm pretty sure that my sister will not be wheeling her FJC when she gets one, but I'm sure I will be in 5-7 years when I buy it from her.

Ah the same old debate about people thinking that people don't wheel their precious vehicles that are brand new. I would just like to take a moment and say what gets a lot of people into the love of off roading in a toyota? It seems to me everyone was a newb at one time and bought a vehicle they probably didn't mean to wheel and got into the sport. It just so happens that right now the introductory vehicle is the FJC. People just need to step back and think how awesome it is that a lot of new people are learning the sport with them buying their new FJC's because they are stumbling on a different world that they were previously unaware of.

I wheel my FJ, I wheel it a LOT and I have the rash to prove it, I have the sliders I built with my own two hands to prove it, BUT that doesn't make me any different than any other FJC owner. I will gladly lend a hand to any new FJC owner that wants to find out what they can do with their vehicle and the fun that they can have, and I think everyone that is a TLCA member should do the same. We all love toyotas and we all love offroading can't we all just have a big gay toyota hug? Toyota, oh what a feeling...

I think everyone needs to take a breath. Mike isn't attacking the lot of FJC owners. At the same time, I know you guys are proud of your rides and that's great. Sometimes, maybe things don't come across in writing as they do in real life

The douchebag comment was by Bad Vodoo, not Clownmidget. As for clicking on a differnt site, show me where we have gone wrong. I use the 80's tech as a model to build this tech forum- so I am upset when someone thinks it is negative. We have worked hard to clean up this forum and make it productive for FJC owners. People have the right to voice an opinion and at some point, I don't want to kill every thread that is "controversial". The exception being blatant trolls or ones trolling for stupid arguments. Mike is not that person.

I won't lock this thread but let's keep it civil. I am leaving the douchebag comment as a warning. any more of it and i'll have to do some slapping.

Watch out Aggie or this might happen!!!

I have been wheeling since the first day of purchase of my FJC hardcore trails on of my largest dents happened that day also. This truck is made for wheeling and I get out @ least twice a week on some hardcore trails. I have also seen in my area many fjc owners hitting the trails, more then h3 owners (which I have still have not seen one out and about) everytime I go wheeling I have been catching FJC's on the move. This vehicle is getting more used then a 2 dollar hook er:lol: I would suggest not buying a used one for this reason. Unless it is from an old WASP w/ a cellphone (which there are many) but the people who do wheel get out and do it right:flipoff2:

I did Hell's Revenge during CM 07 on Thursday and there were 4 FJC on that trip. One lifted 3" with 315's one 2" lift 285's and one no lift 285"s and one totally stock. They all made it with the only trouble coming from the total stock one. Hell's Revenge minus the escalator is a fairly easy trail and can be done n stock form by a capable rig and driver.

As for the stock FJ it ran into some problems mostly because of driver input not vehicle short comings. The FJC with the 2" lift and 285's did great never scraping or needing help, granted it was being driven by one of the FJ trail team guys but it just shows that is can be done without any body damage or under carriage scraping.

The rig in the picture looks to be lifted with larger tires, with the rear locker he could do Hell's revenge with ease and never get a scratch on it.

On another note, Saturday we did Pritchard Canyon. A FJC with a 2" lift and 285's and a locked front asked to tag along, we snickered. He hit the trail with gusto. I am not sure how far he got as I broke the welds on my spring pad in the rear and had to repair it and turn around. I will tell you this, he made believers out of us all and there were only hard core rigs there. If he did make it all the way look for a big write up in the Toyota only mag, the owner was riding with Joe Caligio (sp) and was snapping pics all over the place of this rig. I hope he made it all the way, i know I was impressed with what he did until I ad to turn around.

We all buy rigs for different reasons, my wife's FJC is stock and will stay that way for a while. We bought it because her 2000 4runner had to many miles on it and we did not like the look of the new ones. This vehicle fit our needs, dogs, 4x4, easy to clean and most important Toyota reliability. It may never see the trail but that is OK because for what she needs it fits the bill perfectly.

Here are some pics of the FJ and my truck. I am going up the escalator on HR.

hey tom. i was impressed by the FJCs on Hell's Revenge as well. I had the big brown 60 on Thurday's run. The only problem with the stock one was bad spotting. I liked hearing the traction control wail on the way up Tip Over Challenge. They appear to do better than stock Hummers and Xterras. A rubicon is probably better off-road, but over all the FJC is a much nicer and more practical machine.

Yep given the chance to spend time in any rig will gain you more ability then web wheeling. The FJ does wheel well and can do stuff if it has some one behind the wheel that has spent time there. Mike (clown) has a fun outllook on life and expresses him self that way. Firsttoy does a wonderful job keeping this section of the site with helpfull stuff and helping the new guy on the block. It is always a good read to browse through the site (as well as the others I visit).
Some times the skin is a little too thin and other times it is thick. Just learning each persons style will help us to better appricate the others words. Hopefully we all can play nice in the sand box.
As for wheeling the FJ, Chris(on HR that day in moab) and I have a lot of days in a stock, then slightly lifted Fj and have learned how really capable they are. It is alot of just learning to drive differently then I have in the past. You more than likely not believe how many time we have done what people have told us is impossiable, do it and not have any body damage to show. Some scraps and such below on the skids and under body parts.
Yes I do remember the 80's stuff, I have wheeled 80's for well over 7 years. Stock to current state. I have listened to the fun expression of different people over the years. It is the web wheelers that are the nay sayers, not the guys that get out and work the tool they have selected. The person that takes the time to work the tool they have selected has a good amount of respect for others that work the tool they have picked. Wheel the junk, build it, fix it, wheel it, make it better to fit the need you want. I also have watched people that have not listen to the nay sayers and are having fun wheeling and expressing them selfs with fun and glee at what they wheel with. It takes all kinds to live in this world and it will take all kinds of different tools for them to express them selfs in this world. We all started some where.

Thanks for taking care of this site FirstToy. later robbie
