Anyone remove the brush guard from an ARB/IronMan, etc.?

As much as I'd like to put a winch bumper on the 100, I can't find one that I really like. Well, I like several of them - if they didn't have the brush guard. For me, it's a useless 25 (guessing) pounds of steel - 'cause I don't push trees down with the 100 and I don't live on the Serengeti (where they actually have "brush").

It may also be that I can't get over that they look like they were all designed for a Discovery, and retrofitted to the 100. I mean come on, if you were starting from scratch, would you maybe consider the lines of the truck - the grille - when you started drawing?

Any of you guys removed the brush guard on any of them?

Note: The Blueberry is the clear exception to the above - in that it does NOT look retrofitted from anything. But I (gulp) don't like it. And yeah... I know. I'm in the minority on this one.

^ what he said. the sahara is cheaper as well. Also, its not a "brush guard". Its more of a kangaroo/ white tale guard.

Better yet, just go with a blueberry if you dont desire the upper protection. I am not a fan of the aesthetics of the blueberry either. But its an amazing option if you dont want the stuff up top. The better approach angle is enticing.

Damn, Snook's truck looks great. LOVE that bumper. And yeah - the Sahara would be the one to start with.

I know the Blueberry is extremely well designed and built. And, the angles are awesome. It's just that the mouth reminds me of a certain cartoon...

This might not be a helpful post in the sense that I cant say if removing the brush guard or modifying a perfectly good bumper (specially a new one) is a good thing.

I can understand the look might not be appealing to some and it is somewhat old fashioned and repetitive because almost every ARB bar looks the same. But why try and reinvent the wheel?? These guys have an extremely strong and functional design. If it works, why change it? If you dont like the look, get one of the Sahara bars, which you dont have to cut to take off the hoop.

Where I come from, a LOT of people have custom front bumpers and there are more manufacturers than I can count (although the number is sadly decreasing very quickly) All of those have tried to copy the australian designs and tweaked them to "work" with the lines of the vehicle. The result is rather crappy and ends up in bulky, heavy designs with very poor angles and nowhere near as functional or good looking as the ARB and other old fashioned, tried and true australian bars.

To sum it all up, dont hack up a perfectly good bar, look for a Sahara bar, or the Ironman (which, if i recall correctly you can also remove the hoops). I think the day you hit an animal, tree or other similar object is the day you thank the brush guard, or wish you had one, depending on the case..

Also, why not go full custom???

Cheers,

Luis

Got a good chuckle outta that one.

And yes i would also go with a Sahara bar unless you get a combination bar for cheap to modify. I was torn between the Sahara bar (without the chrome hoop) and the combination bar. With with the comb. bar for the added protection from deer and other animals on road.

Yup, this is why I'm going with a tubeless BIOR

I think this may be your answer. Get Mike at bump it off road to customize one the way you want it. Probably cheaper than an ARB and certainly more stout.
