I'm thinking of either powder coating or ?cad plating my brake calipers when I rebuild them; anyone have any experience with doing this?

No one has ever coated or plated their calipers? Maybe I need to post this in the tech sections??

I started a thread in the 80 section after no responses here. I have read elsewhere that painting the calipers holds the heat in so that they stay hot longer.

Powder is much thicker than paint!

Yellow chromate them or have them polished

My purpose is not for appearance per se, but for protection against rust. Agree with the powder coating being thick, just that I saw OEM painted or powder coated calipers in a factory new 100 and was wondering if anyone knew how they were coated. I did find one rebuilder (Goldline Brakes) that will rebuild and coat them using some sort of special polymer; only thing is that he charges $250 per caliper.

Maybe you're asking in the wrong forum.

Why not just have them dipped in chrome?

Because I'm not driving a purple 80 with 24 inch chrome spinner wheels.

I'd worry about any potential effects of brake fluid + high heat on even a durable PC finish. Perhaps that's why the $$ polymer choice? Just typing out loud, here.
I'd vote for a quality rattlecan job for ease of recoat, when/if needed.

I guess no one picked up on my sarcasm.
They're calipers on an SUV that you probably wheel. Who cares about the mall quallity of brake caliper coatings?

I am trying to do some powdercoating of my hinges and some brackets on my 76. The prep on them has ben a little painful... I can imagine trying to prep calipers, especially unless you have bought all new. I hope yours dont look like mine. Save the cash or invest it somewhere else on the rig. Good on ya if you want to go that far though. :cheers:x3

I had mine cad plated. My friend did this also and are holding up very well. GL
