Who is your carrier and agent?
I have Allstate, but it took a lot of coercing to get them to write a stated value policy (threatening to go elsewhere). Unfortunately, the agent I had dealt with flew the coup and I haven't really talked with his replacement much yet. I have to deal with him on another issue soon so let me test the waters (I need to make some changes to my homeowners' coverage but my house is made out of tires, so it should be a fun conversation).

12k is way, way out of my ballpark. I'm talking to a guy about the truck below - his ask is 6500, and it seems to be in pretty good condition, save for a few minor faults. I just responded to his email, and asked him for more detail shots, undercarriage, engine, etc.

as far as first impressions go, what do you guys think?

Greg - do you know about pelican parts? forums.pelicanparts.com - a bbs like this one, excellent porsche knowledge.

That's a nice looking 60 - I prefer the gray interior. You may still be able to negotiate a lower price if it needs some work. 60s are probably at thier lowest in the market before the really good examples begin to fetch more (but I'm not convinced we're quite there yet).

I'm on the Rennlist forum and get some parts from Pelican, but I find the Pelican board to be a little in-your-face (kinda like Pirate).

Looks pretty nice, clean interior and good color. If you don't buy it, go ahead and share the contact info for the rig.

huh. excuse me for living. i guess i will buy it then.

im not sure what color the sky is around here to tell the truth. maybe i shop in the wrong place but ive seen a number of fj60s that were complete rust bucket piles of sh*t and they sold for 7k+.

but i dont put a whole lot of value on the stock radio so maybe thats my problem.

i will tell the guy that "cruisergreg" says his car is worth very little and see what he says. after all, it has been garaged and you know, that just ruins it.

sorry for the sarcasm, im just not feeling very charitable today what with that sort of reply.

one more thing:

>probably need extensive replacement of belts, hoses, etc at substantial cost

i guess i should have mentioned, he has maintained the vehicle as new and since new and has all receipts.

to me a traceable history (provenance as it were) is priceless, but again i guess our skies are different color.

one love

play nice everyone.

So question for you guys - for 6500, should I be expecting a mint truck? Not one of these garage find showroom fresh ebay examples, but are there trucks out there with original, rust-free bodies, clean interiors, mechanically sound? Basically the third car at the weekend home type truck. What kind of price ballpark do I need to be in to grab one of them? and should I be modifying my search? right now I'm looking on autotrader, cars.com, craigslist, here, cruizers, etc.

Thanks.

Hard to tell without more photos, but at first glance it looks real nice.

More info - 220k miles, and this to deal with on the roof. INterior is pretty clean, but a bit ratty.

So I know the body is fairly straight, it's a bit worn, beat up dash, rust on the roof, definitely taken some wear and tear. on the plus side, the springs look good, so it probably wasn't used for hauling a bunch of crap around.

More interior:

I am sure people will chime in here but rust free? you are not going to get near your $6500 unless you stumble across something. rust free means just that, rust free. that truck you just posted with the roof rot for $6500... walk on that. Dont get that.

For $6500 you can expect a good body, no rot on the frame... no cracks in the dash and everything to work. It should not need new tires or _need_ new springs. I know in the for sale section Sporin sent you to Johns white cruiser. That is a fair price even thought you dont like the color but take a look at the condition and what he has stated it is in.

Me on the other hand... I am asking $12k for my FJ 62. I am guessing its high as I only have a couple of interested people but my truck is built like a rock and is in great shape and for the right buyer, it is a turnkey wheeler and expedition truck.

So, back to you... for $6500 you will see some rust on the frame and even the wheelwells but dont take any rot for that money. People will tell you that you I found this for $2500 or that for $3500 but you seem to be in a hurry. If you aren't, take your time and you will find something. Also do cars.com within like 250 miles of NYC. That is how i found my first cruiser. Also take a look at the yankee toys group and gotham city cruisers... people are flipping good trucks all the time and you know they care for them.

HTH...

That roof rust will run you some dough to get properly done.

How do I know? My 60 had the exact same rust.

Well, I am not in a true hurry - that is to say, i don't actually NEED this truck now. but there are two things that make me seem more rushed - first, I finally have the cash to grab one of these things, and I'm like a kid that can't wait for the sun to rise on christmas. Secondly, I feel like when a good example does come up, it gets grabbed within hours, so i'm trying to get my reach far enough, fast enough, that I'm aware of these diamonds in the rough and can jump on one when it surfaces.

As far as the price goes - I had the opportunity to buy a pretty mint 62 out in san fran (it was the white one in los altos, sold by dave: http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/davescar4sale/my_photos). There was a red 62 with, as the buyer said, NO RUST, that sold on ebay for 4 grand. Maybe the 62s are easier to come by?

What do you think a reasonable price range would be for a rust-free truck? 7, 8 grand? I'll have to fix it anyway, so might as well put the marginal thou into it at the outset.

I'm still pretty convinced I can pick one up for this price, just a question of patience (I hate that word)?

I'm not discounting provenance, but you also implied that the truck sat for long periods of time not being operated. Sitting for months in a damp garage will undo alot of the careful maintenance you mention.

You saw the Porsche pics? This comes up all the time with that group - guy finds a 911 or whatever with 25K miles that's been in storage and makes a top-dollar deal without a mechanics inspection. Then comes to find an expensive set of problems due to lack of use.

Even with stack of receipts a foot thick, a 115K, all stock FJ60 won't sell for $12K in any market I know, and it was inappropriate to provide an uninformed valuation to a potential seller who won't get that figure.

Oooch, that rust isn't pretty - if you see that much there then there's surely more. Certainly looked better in the far away pics.

Jgordon, you shouldn't have trouble finding a really well preserved example for your $6 - 8K range, possibly less. Patience is a virtue ;-). Just be sure to really give any example a thorough inspection because it's seeming that any FJ60 that hasn't spent most of its life in the dry, dry southwest is going to have at least some cancer starting by this time.

i talked to dave about his wheels on that fj62.... he sent me an email the other day that he's also selling his fj60 in similar conditon and will be putting it up on CL in the near future.

i live in the same town, sent him the link to this thread and i'll be happy to take a look at it if you want. my time is pretty limited though, i'll do what i can.

I appreciate the thought - I've been in contact with Dave through the process. He's out of town this weekend, but he's going to clean up the 60 and send me some photos. If it comes to that, I'd very much appreciate your taking a look.

Jared
