I know this isn't the want ads, but I figured you guys might know if a truck and not necessarily find yourselves in the want-ads too often.

I had a lead on a solid 87, but the guy backed out. Shyt happens.

I'm in the market for a solid, rust-free and mechanically sound 60 - preferably 85-87, as I'd like to throw a 5-speed in at some point. Rust is most important, followed by mechanicals, then interior. This goes in order of my abilities to make it right with minimal cash and time outlay.

Color - I know, it shouldn't be important, but I really like the dark grey. Or silver, followed by champagne/tan, etc. If this was a full-time wheeling rig, I could do the bright red/blue, but it'll be a daily driver for part of the year.

I'd rather it were stock - I'd like to build it up myself, but I can handle small changes.

So if you know of a buddy or have passed a pristine cruiser with a for sale sign on it recently, please keep me in mind.

Thanks.

Hey J,

Don't know of a 60 but I know of a 62, that according to the owner is "rust free" I haven't seen it myself but he wants 4k for it. It's in SE idaho, so if you're interested pm me

Thanks for the heads up on the 62 - I was debating, but in the end I'd like to go with a manual.

Greg - thanks - I appreciate any help I can get.

I have want ads on craigslists in sunny places (CA, AZ) but they limit the number of concurrent ads you can run. I'm checking CL all over the place, but with no "universal" search (you have to click on each city, unless i'm missing something) it's also a pain in the ass to do.

I figure word of mouth is always better anyway.

Not necessarily looking for brown, but pm me your email and we'll discuss some photos and details.

Thanks.

Here's one of the nicest I've ever seen. I came extremely close to buying it about a week ago with check in hand, but decided to go another route due to book value vs. insurable value and an unwillingness risk a possible $9K loss if wrecked (daily driver). Houston drivers aren't the best unfortunately..... I'm going with an 80

It drove great, has new paint and a Toyota installed brand new 2F with receipts, and 33K on clock. I checked everything out thoroughly and it's legit. $15750.00. I'm not affiliated with the owner - just know it's a nice 60. If you want the contact info. hit me with a PM offline.

Wow. That's beautiful, but roughly 2-3x my price range. I'll pm shortly - I'd like to find out more about the truck, even if I have no chance of getting it.

I'm curious - if the truck is 16k, and you total it, how is that a 9k loss? taking out your current ride?

Thanks.

Multiple insurance carriers that I talked with would only guarantee me $6K max, but said that they would take receipts for work done, and/or a professional appraisal into account. I talked with an adjuster at State Farm, went through the details on the 60, and asked his opinion. He said off the record that the best I could ever expect to get is about $10K, and again, they could only guarantee me book value.

As much as it killed me to pass it up, I decided that I didn't want to risk the exposure on a daily driver that would see 2+ hrs per day on the road in Houston. Additionally, it I would probably take a pretty good hit paying $16K for it if I ever had to turn around and sell it. I'm still not very happy with my decision - although I suspect it was the correct one...

I even considered unloading my '58 Corvette to keep the FJ60 as a 3rd car in its place. How eaten up with Cruisers am I?

78crzr......I understand what your thinking is. I have a 61 Vette that is unreal to drive but I enjoy driving my FJ62 just as much or more. The vette does get more looks though:) Dave

Thanks Dave. Nice to know someone else out there has the same opinion in liking to drive a Cruiser as much or more than the Vette. Maybe I'm not totally nuts after all! Good looking '61 you've got there!

Manuchao, thanks for the heads up - I'm actually looking for a more boring color - if I had the funds, this would be a full time wheeling rig, and I'd get a cooler, more "out there" color like a blue.

Re: insurance - my other car's an 89 911, and a lot of porsche guys go with a "stated value" or "agreed value" (forget the exact terminology) insurance policy. Basically, the bluebook on most old porsches is much lower than market price, so rather than going through the hassle of proving market value in an insurance claim, the carrier and holder agree to a value of the car (in some cases, you just tell them "if it's wrecked, you pay me X") and the carrier will simply multiply your stats, plus the likelyhood of a loss, times this new value and charge you that as a premium, rather than using the bluebook value in their calculations. Makes sense all around. I know that was long-winded, but hopefully it'll help someone.

I did this with both the Porsche and the 60, although for some reason my agent was much less willing to discuss "stated value" for some reason for the 60. Since I've probably got about $25K into the LC I wasn't willing to take the "just show us your receipts" assurance from the agent.

The first one is the artsy shot. 89 911 coupe, engine enlarged to 3.4 liters, not sure what it's putting out hp wise (haven't finalized the exhaust system or the chip, and dyno'd it). hopefully around 265. it weighs roughly 2900 lbs, so I'm hoping at some point to breach the 10 lbs per hp mark.

The second one is the porsche version of wheeling - drivers' education events. Track time with an experienced instructor telling you where to brake, shift, etc, basically how to drive better, smoother, and faster. much fun.

Those Porches have any TEQ parts in them? NGK plugs, or sumpin'?

as a matter of fact a guy who is the next door neighbor of a buddy of mine in chico ca approached me as i was getting into my 60. he wanted to know what a vehicle like that was worth. i questioned him some and heres what i found out: its a 87 i believe he said, fj60 for sure, he is the original owner. it has 115,000 miles on it because he has been out of the country as an engineer (ditch digger he called it) for large amounts of time since then. it is 100% stock and has no problems passing smog (which to me means the motor is in near perfect condition. he was quite worried about one fault : the driver side seat has a tear in it. he also was apologetic about having changed out the stock toyota radio at some point! he says its never been in a wreck, no rust, rarely taken off road and then gently, and garaged every night it has been in town.

my jaw dropped and i started making quick calculations about how i could sell my current vehicle and score this but logistics just dont allow it. i might reconsider later this week. he says he has no idea what its worth but its got to be more than the 1900 blue book value (ah yeah, duh!)

so anyway as i morphed from predator to objective observer i told him dont even consider less than 12K and i told him about this site and said to check the classified ads and/or place one. i also mentioned ebay motors.

i have not seen this vehichle but he says its brown (sh*t brown i think i refer to it as) and sounds to be pretty darn perfect.

so, if anyone wants me to hook them up with it send me an email at wjust@dgweb.com and i will see what i can do. one thing though, i dont want this guy ripped off because he seems a decent sort and before he sells it for 7k or something ridiculous like that i would buy it myself and keep it for a stock rig, so im going to be kind of protective about it.

let me know if youre interested.

one love

What color is the sky in your world?

You've done yourself and everyone else here who might be a buyer a dis-service by overinflating a seller's expectation. While I see $10K+ numbers floated around for near showroom vehicles I don't think I've ever seen a SALE price that high. While 115K is low mileage overall it's still a 20 year old item which will probably need extensive replacement of belts, hoses, etc at substantial cost. And sitting in storage for long periods is not a good thing either.

Six years ago I pair $7300 for a 94K miles, showroom interior (no tear in the seat, OEM radio), near showroom paint, and not a speck of rust rig. It was at the time a fair price for both seller and buyer, but by noi means a steal.

I'm not saying we should misrepresent value to potential sellers, but no one I know would pay $12K for a 60 and the seller will not be disappointed at whatever offers he may get.

Who is your carrier and agent? I talked with State Farm and Allstate and both said NADA plus consideration of receipts. Looks like your agent is easier to work with. If you could post the name and number up here or hit me with a PM with the information so I'll have it for future reference when I do need to insure for more. I've used out of town/state agents in the past with no issues.
