if you are digging in there because your lumbar does not work, you might start with the switch - ie, cleaning it out. I have read reports that cleaning the switch does the job, i need to do this too.
Cleaning the switch, wow, I should have thought of that!
I had the dealer look into mine before my extended warranty went out at 100K miles.... To me it wasn't a priority, but they replaced the whole darn seat because of that lumbar thingy, to the tune of $2400... glad it wasn't my $$$.
In the '04 factory service manual there are 4 pages, 16 steps, and 25 sub-steps in the seat removal and disassembly section before even getting to the lumbar support mechanism! However, it may be you can skip steps and get at it more quickly by removing the seat back. It's not obvious in the manual diagrams. Someone who has actually disassembled a seat should chime in on how complex it really is.
The only special tool mentioned is hog ring pliers, which make it easier but are not necessary. The 2 warnings in the manual are about being careful to not damage the airbag sensor and wiring or the seat heater element and wiring.
All in all, it looks a bit challenging. You might start by removing the seat (4 bolts and some electrical connectors) to get some room to check it out further. If it looks too daunting, just put the seat back in a get a small pillow.
