I'm guessing u never changed the oil since new. if so, that's your problem.

I don't think there has been enough miles to break down the gear oil yet. I think the problem is that Toyota had the gears made in Mexico by a vendor that did not heat treat the metal. It is a common problem on pre May 07? FJC's. There is a tech bulletin on it and should be replaced under warranty if your rig falls under specific build dates.

On the other hand the 315 MTZ's may also be the problem.

flyndrive where can i see this tbs at. i have a pre may 07 going to have dealer change diff oil on next oil change. do gears have to break before they replace them.

Looks like the metallurgy problem to me if the dates fit.

LOL!
At least I hope your being sarcastic..............

No i'm not, on these new fjcruisers, the first change of gear oil needs to be by the 5000 mile mark. The new gears riding against each other causes more metal shavings to be produced due to them being new. This then causes excessive heat which breaks down the gear oil prematurely. When your using ur truck hard offroad and adding stress to the gears, the s***ty oil that is not cooling and lubricating the gears properly doesn't help. This is when the gears break. That is why everyone has been saying there gear oil is black, excessive heat.

I don't have a TSB #. The Toyo dealership would not give me information because they knew I would post it on our club forum. I took it in while breaking it in Moab and was told that it was not under warranty due to the mods and how I used the vehicle. I told them about others that had a problem with the 3rd ring and linked to the thread on the blue room that mentioned the TSB. Within a half hour I was told they were going to cover it because he found the bulletin.

I wish I could give more, but that's all I was told. I think the unit has to break before they will fix it.

Bigger tires make everything else stronger!

(And you can quote me on that!:D)

gears

I saw my buddy change his f.j. rear diff and it was black at 5000 miles.
I got an 07 taco and I'm wondering if it's the same gears.
Anyone know if they're the same or different?

Gear oil would not cause that type of breakage excessive wear maybe but not fractures to the metal.
JMHO

I've broke many differant diffs even 2 day old installs. :)

I was going to change mine out at 20K with the rest of the gear oils, but I am now curious about my own diff oil. I went down and bought some 85W 140 heavy duty gear oil and am going to change it out this evening. Let you know the color later.

not changing gear oil is not the problem. There is absolutely no reason brand new gear oil from the factory is going to cause any issues, even with 'breaking in'.

the rear diffs gear oil turns dark rather quickly on the 8" diff for some reason. I experienced this on the 03 4Runner as well.

I think that gear destruction is from the problems experienced by some others- in possibly faulty mettalurgy or the ring gear flexing away and grenading from stress- this is, i believe, something that hasn't been totally clarified.

I agree that it will not be caused from Gear Oil. Not when it is changed once or twice a year. What I don't like is the fact that my rear differential is a potential bomb waiting to blow at the worst possible moment. You would think that Toyota would own up, and come up with a bulletproof solution to the situation and implement it without a lot of hem hawing around.

To me, the unknown of whether my differential will blow out while I am 50 miles out into the desert beyond help is a real concern.

Maybe if a diff blows in the boonies and someone dies because they were left stranded Toyota will listen up.

I was out near box canyon today going up some those loose steep hills, the atrac was doing its thing but at one point i heard an unsettling clunk, Looked under the rear end and it is leaking (slowly) where the third mates to the housing. What would you do?

A. Immediately change the oil and check for metal or teeth

B. Take it to the dealer and let them look at it under warranty

C. Ignore it and hope the grime will someday seal it up

D. Try to get the dealer to replace my gears due to the fact
that the build was in 6/06.
