Anyone Know about Gears???????

Ok guys I changed out my rear diff fluid. Gonna do all the rest over the next few days. I drained the rear diff, and watched carefully for any sign of debris, or teeth or whatever dropping into the drain pan. Nothing. The used gear oil was obviously USED, which means it was dark, and since it is the original gear oil for break in, it had some silver sheen to it. I know those are tiny metal particles from the break in and am not worried about it.

I then wiped off the drain once it had sit a while and was sure it was empty, and then inserted and tightened back up the plug, wiping it again after snugging it up.

I then inserted the tube from my pump into the fill hole of the pumpkin and pumped 85W 140 gear oil into it until it was level and running back out the hole. As before, snugging up the plug, and wiping excess gear oil off the pumpkin. Lastly, taking a short drive up and down the street, engaging 4lo with differential locker, and getting the new gear oil mixed in thoroughly.

I was out near box canyon today going up some those loose steep hills, the atrac was doing its thing but at one point i heard an unsettling clunk, Looked under the rear end and it is leaking (slowly) where the third mates to the housing. What would you do?

A. Immediately change the oil and check for metal or teeth

B. Take it to the dealer and let them look at it under warranty

C. Ignore it and hope the grime will someday seal it up

D. Try to get the dealer to replace my gears due to the fact
that the build was in 6/06.

Flycast I would definitely select B, take it to the dealer and tell them "Why is that happening, and this (differential gear breakage) is a known problem. Can you check it out?".

This whole rear differential gear problem is starting to bum me out over Toyota. I haven't had any problems with my new FJ, and I have wheeled it pretty hard every now and then since new. However I don't feel comfortable with the unknown of whether my rear diff is going to grenade at any time which could leave me stranded miles and miles from any kind of help. Is Toyota going to give us PEACE OF MIND, and take care of this problem, or am I going to resort to selling my FJ and going and buying another Land Rover? When I take my Discovery off road, I have peace of mind I will get there and back. I am not getting this vibe from my new FJ with the rear diff being sketchy. I am really pretty purturbed about Toyotas lack of bulletproof design lately in their products, and their lack of concern with how the customers feel. Then again, we are just white trash to them so I guess it doesn't matter.

so you want Toyota to fix... a perfectly operating Toyota suv.

The rear diff issue has been gone over in a different thread, quite extensively. You can do some research and see if your truck falls under the build date and do what you need to do.

Good luck with that. I'm pretty sure LR is a tad further down the reliability totem pole than the FJCruiser but go with what makes you feel most comfortable.

Are you basing this on actual experience? I think it's pretty clear that Toyota is looking at all the issues that have popped up with the FJC carefully.
Dealer experience is par for the course and dealing with any auto company is not dissimilar to Toyota's as far as I've heard.

I have first hand experience. If you have an early build, there is a metalurgical issue with the R&P. Dealer took care of it, but there is no official TSB. The reported case numbers are too low, I guess, for TMS to consider it a threatening issue. Word of caution, be nice to your dealer, or you may get stuck with the bill. Honey over Vinegar...

Here's an update on my case...... I have been trying to deal with Toyota directly through the 800# and they denied my claim..... Their "research" found that there is no problem with the diffs, even on early models such as mine. Which by the way mine is a 3/06 #1778, if that matters to anyone. But they told me to go to another dealer and get a second opinion to see if the lift and tires ect. were the causeand they would uphold the warranty. So I went to a local dealer this time, last time the dealer was 3hrs away, and in 10 minutes without question the service manager goes yes it should have been cover.

Not too long ago this dealership replaced a diff on a 06/07 Taco that had a blown diff stock. So he was like I will replace yours!!!!!

Down fall is that I have 4.88's in the rear and 3.73's in the front cause I didn't think this was going to happen. So if and when I get the money from Toyota for the rear I get to regear the front w/an ARB! at no cost to me, other than what I put into the rear!

Anyway I guess the moral of the story is always get a second opinion!!!!

saw the rear diff break first hand today. if you are an f.j. owner you should be very worried. this f.j. only has 6000 miles on it with 33 inch tires. wasn't much of a hill either.
now i wonder if my tacoma has the same rear gears?

Yes same rear diff. Soem might just be better set up than others, and also some R&Ps seem to have had a quality issue. Teh Taco rear failure is well documented over at TTORA. Haven't heard to much lately though.

Another victim of poor engineering. My diff. shattered today. Only 7000 original miles. What a bummer. 5 miles from pavement. 42 degrees and getting colder and darker. I removed the rear driveshaft and successfully
drove out 5-10 mph with the most horrific noise coming from the rear end. Luckily for me no other damage. Towed it to the dealer and will call them in the morning, as it was after hours. To be continued.....

Oh holy hell this is getting worse......... These things are popping left and right now!!! Good news or bad news don't know yet......... Hopefully everyone gets covered under warranty.

Hey guys, I got my FJ back and they covered everything under warranty, including my axle housing as it had a gouge in it. Luck of the draw i guess. They did not acknowledge the pre 06/07 build date issue but i made sure that my new diff was built after 06/07. Good luck out there and i hope ya'll dont have to break down to get this problem dealt with. All we can do is wait and see.
