looking for some reviews on the 80's. The wife flipped/totaled her explorer tuesday morning. We will need a new vehicle soon.

She must have an automatic and the 62 series is much too slow/old for her.

I'm thinking 80 series, she likes the idea of AWD for some reason and likes the look of an 80 with the arb bumper :)

how slow are these rigs compared to the 60's and are any years/engines better than others?

there are some nice ones on mud with bumpers/lifts already installed that caught my attention. Once we find out what the insurance company considers "fair market" value of the explorer i would like to find a local 80 to let her sit in/look at in person if someone in the greenville/simpsonville area doesn't mind meeting us to check one out in person. Most of what i saw on craigslist is a litte rough and torn seats are a big turn off for her, the better shape of one we can look at the better chances are of me talking her into it.

Would hate to drive 4 hrs to look at a car and she not like it in person....i love my wife but that's just how picky she is.

Trying to avoid her buying a wrangler.

I've had my 80 since new in '97. Have done numerous cross-country trips in it driving 80+ MPH for extended periods of time. Heavy and stout trucks, great out-of-the -box 4 wheel capable, crappy gas mileage. Not too quick off the line, especially with larger 315 tires on them.

Wife had an accident in hers early on, some jack-bag ran a red light. Totalled his car and he had to get cut out of it. Ours was fixed and still going strong at 275+K miles.

Much more creature comforts than the 60/62 series, and equally adept off roading. If you compare them to a 60, I think it blows the doors off them. (Don't get me wrong, I've had a couple 60's and like them).

There are a lot of mall cruisers out there at great prices that have never been abused....err, I mean wheeled. Seem to be much more rust resistant than the earlier 60's/40's.

I like mine and cannot after 13 years get my wife to surrender it to me. Sorry, I'm down in FLA so can't show it to you. My wife loves the ARB, lift and big tires. Good luck in your search.

She can sit in mine, it is a '97 40th Anniversary locked, lifted and ARB'd. She might like it and get one. It does have more creature comforts, but if I were looking again, i'd do a 100 series, still tank built but with a V8, liftable and all. I had one and loved it, but I wanted the 80 I have now more, so the story goes... Any how 100's are coming down in price as they aren't moving and a good 98-99 can be had for a decent price. My .02

uhh, how's the wife?? She ok??

Hope the wifes not tooo sore. Yikes. Search the 80's section on accidents, pretty impressive track record for people walking away from stuff that you wouldn't in other trucks. IMHO, my 80 with 315's accelerates like a sports car compaired to my old 60 with 31's.
She cant go wrong with a 80 or 100. Search the Atlanta craigslist and don't forget the lexus versions of each sometimes pop up for less money.

The wife is ok. She's going to stay out from behind the wheel of a car until her month long on-going migrane goes away (chances are the wreck was caused by lack of sleep and meds for the headaches)

She will have to go to a hand specialist monday to see if pins need to be put in her hand and if any damage was done to her wrist.

Other than that she walked away ok.

It was a single car accident, she took out a ditch on roper mtn rd and cleared a drive way.

should she have had a lift and some 33" tires she would have simply poped over the ditch and taken out a mailbox.

How is the engine swap going?

i guess i need to update the swap thread!

just my .02 The 80 series with factory e lockers and a good set of tires is the most capable, reliable and durable stock luxury 4WD in North America. All the others aside from newer model cruisers lack the off road capabilities. Do your homework on the other models ,100,200 and the FJ . You cant go wrong choosing the 80. Try to find one owned by a cruiserhead who is anal about PM.

if i can talk her into it...it will probably be a lexus 80 series.

She got a VW beetle rental car so now her attention is focused on little cars :(

I'm taking her to some offroad trails this sunday after the early morning church service to try to convince her an SUV is a better choice...but not just any SUV but an 80 series SUV

Playing Devil's Advocate why an 80 series? I would love to get my wife into an 80 or 100 (probably for selfesh reasons(only reason why not a 100 is bc she would want a newer one $$$)) but i know it will never happen. Why not something like a highlander or XC90? Both come with all wheel drive/4wd options. Both have good crash test ratings and get better gas milage than an 80.

i'd like to avoid a 100 because i can get an 80 loaded with goodies (lift/tires/bumpers) for the price of a 100!

and they are easier to work on than most newer vehicles, i do all of my own wrenching so ease of repairs is a BIG factor for me.

And an 80 series in good shape will be just as reliable as most new vehicles.
