Go to the SoCal Craigslist deals on Expo, a few pages back there is a guy with a bunch. He's near LAX if I remember correctly.

I have the XXL..whats up?

I'm considering building an aluminum hard shell integrated on the truck like Campteq, but I want it to open up like the James Baroud hard shell.
I just want to check it out to see how they keep water out and structure support against high wind, hinges if any, gas struts and locking components. The clam shell type is cool if I was traveling alone, but I have 2 kids now, we need the extra room inside.

I work in Santa Clarita, like long talks about cruisers over craft beers, easy going...
not looking for LTR....lol.

landcruiserphil out of Scottsdale has the pop up like you've got pictured above. He may be a good source of info. He'll be at DRV later this month if you are planning on attending that event. He'd be a wealth of info to you on these. His design is entry from the outside only.

Are you thinking more of a complete pop up like an old VW Westfalia where you'd need to remove your entire roof and when extended have the room from the inside?

LOL! thanks for the heads up, I'm glad we are on the same page.

Brent, my intentions are for outside entry, I don't want to cut the roof. I was looking for the hinges VW used for the Euro van pop up, those are kind of cool but impossible to find and not exactly what I want. It looks like James Baroud use gas struts from their youtube video.

I have an Autohome Maggiolina Airtop, size=medium. It has 4 gas struts vs cranking, scissors lift of the other maggi's. Near LAX.

This is good info, have you had experience with other type of opening mechanism? How does the gas struts do in the wind? I would like to check it out when you have some time.

Baroud is good to 75MPH they say. It handled dropping pine tree branches about 1-2" diameter and a real hard continuous rain storm for several hours this past 4th of July when we were in Mammoth, Lightning storms from the inside thru the windows was fun. Not a drop got inside.
Fan worked great sucking out the moisture so it wasn't wet walled in the morning. This year they have a lock out feature built in, they use up real estate, but it on the side and in the corners, best place for it. If it were at the end, you'd lose overall length. I'm 6'4" so that was my main consideration.
I drove from one site to another with it up, just to see, and it was rigid. I figured it would wobble a bit, but it was dead solid. My wife even commented on that fact. (only around the corner)
