I will start off by saying that I don't understand anything about power bands and torque converter lock-up and shift logic and such. I did install a throttle controller a while back and while this has helped with pedal response, it does not help with gear hunting and how it will drop 2 or 3 gears when going up (what I feel) is a slight incline, like an overpass on the freeway. Anyway, there is a tuner coming my way to tune Toyota's and Lexus trucks with what he calls an Overland Tune. His shop is about 5 hours from me but he says he travels thru my area every 2-3 months doing tunes and adjustments. I asked him some questions and this was his responses:

It will definitely help while towing and slightly while using cruise control. If you’re using the radar cruise, I would turn it off by holding the button that manages distance for 3 seconds. The benefits include improved throttle response catered to your setup/preference, smoother and refined shift logic, increased low and mid-range torque, and more linear/consistent power delivery overall. Cost is $500 which includes any necessary TSB updates for the ECU, VIN registration to the VF Tuner software, as well as if you need an adjustment down the line for throttle as an example.

Just trying to figure out if this is worth it. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Interesting...
First question is what size tires are you running? If you're running 33's or larger, your biggest issue is you need to regear your diff's. Larger tires is the number one issue with gear hunting and poor highway grade climbing performance. I'm running 35's with regeared (locked) front and rear diff's. That being said, I don't have any issues with gear hunting going over some of the long and steep passes (Grapevine (HWY 5) and El Cajon (HWY 15)) we have going north out of So. Cal.
Second, is there a higher resolution picture of that graph you posted? I'd like to read it and see what their claims are.
Third, in almost a quarter century of the GX460 being on the market, there has not been a product for messing with the air/fuel, etc. ECU for increase in HP and/or torque and MPG. So I don't mean to dash your hopes but I really wouldn't expect much. Only for adjusting throttle response, as you have already.
Most of these performance chips always seem to only offer minimal increases which offer more of a "Hawthorne effect" (placebo) in the butt when stomping on the pedal.
But, I hope I'm wrong and this actually works with real world performance, and MPH increases!

I'm running 33" MT's. They were on the rig when I bought it from my friend and I've never been in a stock rig or one with stock size tires so I have no comparison.
This is the best I can do with that picture.
And that's what I would be afraid of, is the end result will only be what I already have with the throttle controller.
But he does say that his tune will help with the gear hunting while towing.

With all due respect, I'd put the $500.00 clams that you'd use for this performance chip and invest in regearing your rig.
You'll feel the difference way more with a regear than with a chip. You'll go over highway grades easier (do you even have those in Louisiana?)
Your Lo4 will also be much lower providing more torque and throttle control when off roading.

Factory calibration are pretry bad on these vehicle. The tune definitely makes the driving much more enjoyable. I am not saying it makes more power but the transmission shift point tuning makes it a lot better with oversize tires.

Unfortunately no tuner can adjust cruise control logic. It's better with the tune but it would still downshift on slight hill. Partially because the overdrive are designed for stock tires on flat surface only.

The new 10 and 8 speed transmission are able to compensate for this as a much subtle increment. They have multiple overdrive gear that can compensate for slight elevation change.

The 4 cylinder turbo with 8 speed have much better driveability than 4.6 with 6 speed.

I got an aggressive 89 YotaWerx tune and it's worth every penny. My cruise control hunting issue was fixed, my throttle response is significantly improved, and my overall high elevation performance is much better. If I didn't live in drive such high elevations I'd opt for the max 93 tune. It was worth the money nonetheless.

Cruise control performance one thing I think would be nice about a tune vs a throttle controller, as a throttle controller does nothing when the cruise is on.

This is true. I got no benefit from the pedal commander with the cruise control. That's one reason why I eventually got a tune. Living in the mountains is one good reason to get a tune. Lots of elevation change so gear hunting is annoying LOL.

Anybody know if yotawerx has tune for the 19+ yet? I checked a little over a year ago and they said there was still no VF tuner support.

I remember you getting this tune, but can't recall if it was a "plug-n-play" or if you had to take it to a location for them to flash your ECU (or whatever)?
Do you mind reposting the "who, what, where and how much" again?

I had Bomber Tunes do it and I had to meet up with Joey to get the tune done. It costed me $450.

I originally contacted mantics on Club Lexus about a dyno tune and he pointed me in to the direction of at the time my local tuner (Bomber Tunes). Maybe recommend contacting him or Bomber Tunes to find out who might be in your area.

I have a YotaWerx on my GX470. It's worth every penny.

Honestly I'd suggest paying a bit more for the single-vehicle VF Tuner license and USB/OBDII dongle. You can get them from YotaWerx. It's pretty darn easy to load the tune yourself. Then you can switch back between the 87 and 91 tunes or even go back to stock. I reloaded my tune in <10 minutes this past weekend.

I agree.
