Anyone here in CSC done a FJ60 PS conversion into their 40? I'd like to do this but a) don't have a welder, and 2) still a little confused as to how it's supposed to work.

Conversely anyone have the know-how/welder to help me take this on? I'm obtaining all required parts.

I have done one (1966 45 wagon) and gathered info from 4 other convertees to get the info.

#1, use a 1985+ steering box 60 box, 80 series have same spacing so fj62 and fj80 will work.

#2, get a 70 series pitman arm ("flat") if you need it, the 70 series tie and relay are also a good idea (use mini truck steering arms, 60 arms, or 70 arms). Pitman arm has bigger end, so you may want to switch on down the line.

#3, I used a 3/8" scab plate on inside of frame and sleeved the frame with 1/2" ID tube.

#4, biggest pain is the shock towers, you can switch right and left towers to get different offset, get Ford shock towers, or make your own.

#5, 1986 + intermediate steering shaft from 60/62 has more movement than earlier (I have one of these if you need it) and work best.

#6, for 1973-1980 40 series, use a same period FJ55 steering shaft which has splines at the firewall end then no need to weld / coupler flang cut off etc (I might have one)

If you want 70 series measurements I can walk out to the garage- mine is a postal style (rhd) but works in theory.

A little more complicated that I thought? I hadn't read that shock tower changes were needed. Would you go the 60 PS route again or do a mini-truck PS box? I have the option to do either at this point.

Also, how many beers to have you help me? :D

If your rig's steering is in top shape-go minitruck. It takes only 5 hrs start to finish.

I finally got the 315s on the 40 last night. There is very little turning radius to the right it appears (havn't yet driven her), that's why I'm contemplating the FJ60 PS setup. Any further thoughts on this? rick_d would you do it again?

what do you not like about the Saginaw conversion? Are you determined to keep it all Toyota? The saginaw is a much stouter box and it really cleans up and simplifies the steering componentry. Granted it does involve welding but you are running 35" tires and you will appreciate the more powerful box offroad.
