about to get a snatch block. I need at least 24000 lbs rating. Wondering about the Warn ones. The HD red ones look completely different than the usual twist open blocks a la ARB, TMax etc. Doesn't look as easy to open, is not rated higher and is much more expensive (Warn 24000 $150 vs ARB 30000 $70 and less for other brands).

What am I missing here? Surely it's not just the name. Is the difference in cost because of some significant advantage? What? They sort of look stronger but I guess it's the rating that matters.

How easy are these things to open and use?

Can you use a big shackle with them or do they get in the way?

Really hard to tell from the Warn photos....

TIA

I have one, Dam thing weigs a ton. Actually, other than the weight they are just as easy to open/operate as the flat plate ones..

I got mine just because of line size (over 1/2")

My ARB works just fine...

how does it open?

does it seem stronger or better somehow?

looks to me like there is a pin similar to this:

on the backside of the D-ring here

and you probably pull that out, flip up the D-ring gizmo, and flip open the block
that's how I'd see it working

yes, talked to Warn. There is a springy bit on one of the pins.

Never got a good answer as to why they use that design rather than the flat side ones...

check out rockstomper.com

I get all my recovery gear from these guys. no affiliation, just a happy customer. When I called them, it was just after I got my winch and I had lots of questions about this stuff. they were knowledgable, friendly and just plain cool.

They have their own snatch block - it's what I have.

oh and by the way, had lots of fun in SB. thanks for the insider tips - my in-laws were quite impresssed.

heh my snatch block is an REI special! rated for 24,000 lb tho! think it cost me 28$
