Just got my tech license and immediately applied for a vanity call sign. My application was approved but I got my third choice of call sign. Its not a big deal, I'm just curious as to what was wrong with my first two choices. I did the call sign search and they came up (and still do) with not being found which I believe means they are currently unassigned. The ones denied were 1x3 format starting with "W" (cuz I just wanted to say whiskey on the radio). I thought a Technician could have a 1x3, am I wrong?

Is there a way to find out the reason for the denial?

IIRC, the call sign format/number is region dependent. Maybe something like that applies to vanity signs as well? I vaguely remember picking a specific number in my call sign, probably for that reason.

For sure the number in 2X3 or 1X3, i.e. the "X" is regional and being in KC, my digit is 0 and is what I got when they assigned my first call sign. That doesn't apply to vanity call signs though. My new call sign is KC4TLC.

Without knowing what you were looking to do it is hard to say. There are several reasons that could apply. A good place to look for details is the website ae7q.

Thanks. What I was hoping to get was W4PZ2.

That is not a valid format. You have 2 numbers. A 1X3 is one letter like A,K,N,W a number 0-9 and three letters a-z
Thank you. I didn’t understand that numbers couldn’t be part of the 3.
