Are you saying use the wheel cleaner on paint?

I don't see it being as effective as a dedicated iron remover though. They're made specifically for this and paint safe. The IronX and similar products are intended to sit on paint for a while to work. I don't think I'd let wheel cleaner sit on the paint.
That particular wheel cleaner (and all others that change to a plum color in contact with ferrous particles) has the same chemical (ammonium thioglycolate) as Iron X. I have used Sonax Full Effect wheel cleaner (same chemical) when I was out of Iron X and it worked ok. Most wheels are clear coated like paint, after all.
I don't love them because they are kind of goopy, but it works and like @JT4runner said, it can be found at retail and cheaper. Or if you know a beautician who can buy perm chemical (same active ingredient) that might work too. J/k I don't recommend you actually do that, though it should theoretically work.
