Just moved out to Mesa and am unpacked and settled for the most part. I'd like to do a little exploring but am a bit overwhelmed with all the options. Seems like some places you need some sort of land trust permit to be able to travel, some you don't. Any places a "must go" type place? I'd love to find somewhere where I can drive off the beaten path and find some water for the dogs to swim around in and hang out for a day. I don't mind driving a few hours to get to cool places. If you're up for going, even better, if not, let me in on your secret places!

Bah, I wish I was still out there!

This is a great book: Guide to Arizona Backroads & 4-Wheel-Drive Trails 2nd Edition: Charles A. Wells, Matt Peterson, Shelley Mayer: 9781934838198: Amazon.com: Books

The land permits are really easy to get (and cheap) - if you're going to spend a lot of time exploring, I'd get them.
Awesome, thanks! I'll pick it up for sure. Just did some sight seeing with the dogs and some light off roading up on the Mongollon Rim today. Had a really good time, and it was only 80F vs the 110F in the valley.

I'm out in the west valley, but I'm looking to get my GX out on some trails as well.

Broken Arrow in Sedona is fun - if you're lifted and have your steps removed, I think you could do the Devil's Staircase without (much) body damage...my '99 Taco with a 2-3" lift hit the trailer hitch once but was otherwise OK.

I'm ok off-roading and banging the underside of the truck up, but body damage ain't my thing. My truck is perfect. Well, for now at least.

I'll message you next time I'm thinking of heading out. I'm currently unemployed and loving life, but I'll be working soon so not sure what my schedule will be like.
My days pool side with a cold beer are almost over. :-(

Ah you still have steps. Yeah, you don't want to run Broken Arrow yet. :)

Here's a clip of a buddy in his 4R Trail -

Here's Devil's Staircase (not my video) -

I'm pretty sure someone in a stock GX did the staircase but dragged both bumpers. I'm not sure the steps would survive either.

They've been off for a few months now. That pic was from when I was still in Chicago.

That kind of stuff looks fun. I think I've been through worse in Moab, but I know pics/vids are hard to tell just quite how nasty things can look in person.

Ahh, okay. You might be alright then! I never made it up there with my truck so I'm not sure how close your bumpers would be.
