Any issues with 15" wheels on a 80?

I'm doing some planning on my next project, an off road trailer and was curious to know if 15" wheels have any issues on a 80. Brake caliper clearance ok?

While I would like to put matching 16's and 315 on the trailer, it would be a little less expensive to go the 15" route. And 15" BFG Muds are easier to find used.

I don't know about all wheels, (backspacing etc.) but I tried to stick my 15" black wagon wheels from my FJ40 on my 80, they would not clear the brakes.

So I had to leave the 80 on blocks while it's wheels were powdercoated.

My $.02

some say that in ceretian combos of wheel and spacers they will clear but most have found they do not,

I have seen the rear calipers ground on to clear 15's the calipers flexed badly afterwards. (trail buggy)

if you are palnning a new trailer build why not make the trailer take the same 16" wheels and same size tires as your rig, that way spares are compatible between the two.

My 92 calipers are smaller but if any 15 will work it will be the eagle alloys 1069 type or the similar procomp type wheels. they have the most clearance of any 15's. go to a wheel shop and test some out

I tried putting 15" black rock crawler rims on mine, can't remember the back spacing. They would grind on the brake caliper. So it was a no-go.

Okay, thanks guys. Raven, yes, that was why I was asking this. I was thinking it would be easier to find a used set of 35's and some 15" wheels for the trailer then 16's and 315's. And I wanted them interchangable.

Looks like I will need to go the 16/315 route anyway.

:)

I think folks make too much of this spare compatibility thing. How often do you blow tires? And with a trailer you can easily carry an extra spare. How often do you blow 2 tires?...
My trailer has 15" with a different lug pattern... so there... :)

Depends on the trail and what you're doing.

In Death Valley several of us lost tires on the trail...on the first day. Given that we had 3 more days on the trail, it was definitely feasible that someone could've blown 2 tires.

If all you're going to do is cyber-wheel or hang out at the mall, then I wouldn't sweat it...but if you're actually going to hit a real trail...blowing multiple tires is definitely plausible.

Find some 15" wheels that you like, and try them before you buy. It has been said that stock 91/92 80 wheels don't fit, but that doesn't mean some aftermarket ones wont. Just try it before you buy it, heck, you might find something out and 15" rim'd FZJs might become the new hot thing.

i ran a 15" black wagon on the front of my '93 for a few months.

I ran a 91/92 alloy on the front to get me off the trail, scraped the caliper, and gouged the rim.

Nothing short of 16" will fit on the rear without grinding, IIRC.

I saw an 80 last wee with 15s that fit fine but I once bought parts from an 80 that had 15" wheels forced on and subsequently burned to the ground as a result. This is what the calipers look like.

That PO had the IQ of a bag of hair, huh?

Johnny depending on your timeframe, I have 4 pretty decent 80 series rims I'll be selling at some point here.. . 3 are in great shape, one dinged but not that bad either.. $50 each??

You can run 15 inch rims depending on the rim shape/offset along with a little grinding off of the edges of the rear calipers. I am currently running the 15's off of my 40 (they have 35 inch tires on them) on my 80. The rims are older steel chrome spokers. I did need to grind a very small amount off the calipers to eliminate interference. However, the brake pads in the back are down to about 30%. If I put new pads on, the caliper will be pushed out and I may need to remove a little more material. The up side for me is that I can use one set of trail tires for both Cruisers and 35's were definitly a bonus out wheelin in the 80 this past weekend.

besides physical contact, could there be also an issue of adequate space to ensure good air circulation and cooling?

Thanks Andre- Give me holler when your ready, we'll see how far along I am at that point. Looks like I will be going the 16" route just to be safe. Don't want to be burnin down Black & Tan!

I am running 15 inch sunnys on my 80 series. The tyres for the 15 inch rim are a lot cheaper than the same tyre for the 16 inch rim here.

what year?
do you have rear Disk brakes w/ABS on a full float axle?

I am not sure how what years the AUS rear axle matches to the US 93.5 to 97 axle
