Any HAMOM in the future, if not, I have a request...

Hey Jerry, I have a brass drift I can drop off some day (or bring with me) for driving races in and out and popping off the cone washers, just yell if you want to borrow it beforehand (otherwise I intend to be there on the 15th).

Good old Harbor Freight has a plastic coated dead blow hammer on sale. $10 or so? I was going to try and head up there this weekend for an extra set of jack stands, a BFH, and some other things. Let me know if you'd like me to pick one up (If no one else has one...)

Brian

Thanks for the offer, sounds like a decent deal. If you don't mind, I'll take you up on the offer, assuming you feel its worth it once you get your hands on one in person...

Depending on your start time, I could come over for a while. Pack game is at 3:30, so we'll likely go out around 11:00 - early morning I could be there. I have Clint's hub socket right now (SST :) ) and I'm sure he wouldn't mind lending it. I also have Greg's seal driver set. Be sure and buy LOTS of brake cleaner and rags/paper towels, as well as latex gloves.

R

I've got a box of rags and a new box of gloves, will need to pick up some break cleaner. I'm planning on getting a start on things earlier than later. I'm sure I'll be banging on this by 9 am but don't expect everyone to be here that early, that is unless they have a game to get to also...

More thanks, you guys are great. It can wait until the 15th, no need to make a special trip...

Since this is a new project for me, I don't have a realistic time for the task at hand. All I know is that I sat behind a group of rigs on the Rubicon trail while 2 knuckles were repaired on the trail.

We are planning on having the grill fired up with some chicken, burgers, brats and tri-tip, plenty of "snack foods" and enough adult beverages to keep everyone "happy". We will have plenty of soft drinks around as well.

I'm confident that we can get things done in time to sit around and watch some college football on the 52" LCD if people want to hang out after everyone gets cleaned up...

Not sure what tools you have/need, but you can definitely use the hub socket Ramon mentioned. Plus I have a brass bar for driving out cone washers and driving in new races. I also have two floor jacks (one with Ramon) and a pair of large jack stands. I also have a cheap fish scale if you want to use that to set the bearing preload. Plus I have a cheap torque wrench.

Might be a good idea to also borrow a set of thread taps/dies (Joe) just in case.

Doh! Forgot about the fish scale, THANKS. I've got a decent floor jack and 4 jack stands that are "OK" but not great. I've looked around for some better ones but all I see are ones similar to what I have, just "bigger". What happened to the old, pin style that I feel more secure about than the "ratchet" style I see everywhere...

If I finish with my previous HAMFM (Help a member for the month)...:hhmm::hhmm:Sorry Ramon, had too.

I will be there and this is actually a pretty easy deal not much different than a knuckle rebuild. Just make sure you do inventory on parts prior to and make sure everything is there and it's the proper size. You can never be to sure.

Thanks Greg. I'm in the process of doing that now. The one thing I know I need to get are some of the bolts that go into the "back plate" (I'm sure that's the wrong term), R.K. only had 8 and I'll need 16. R.K. did a nice job of putting everything into zip locks to help me keep things straight. I'm putting some of this on him since he told me I "should" have everything I need as long as I get the axle rebuild kit. As he kept handing me part after part, bag after bag, I tried my best to keep everything organized. Its all laid out on the garage floor.

But, yes, I'll do my double check as I continue to read through the various tech articles on ih8mud.

The rebuild kit and new master brake cylinder are arriving today via UPS.

I'm trying to make sure of the necessary tools also. I can see that the axle nut is a key item since I don't have anything that size. I'll go find some good snap ring pliers and the other misc tools I'm finding I'll need as advised from the articles.

Any more "head's up" suggestions will be appreciated...

The axle nut is what you use the hub socket for (I think 52mm). I have one and you can definitely use it. I have some inexpensive snap ring pliers that you can use. Between Greg, Ramon, myself and others in the club we have all the tools. All of the tools should be listed on the IH8Mud FAQ if you want to double check stuff. If not, I have lists and instructions from other sources (besides FSM).

Unless you really want to buy the tools, you can give me a shout if you need something early that you don't have.

54mm. Sears has a nice 2 1/8" socket that works well too.

Jerry, do you plan to start the tear-down that morning? or prior?

I'll get started before, mostly with set up and the "easy" stuff at least. A bunch depends on how the next few days. Without going into a big story, my daughter was hit in my wife's car (slow speed, no airbag deployment, nobody was injured, just screwed the front end up in a big way) and I'm going through all the "fun" of insurance land. The other driver was a new driver and the dad requested an attempt to "keep it off the books" but I haven't been able to get in touch with them since we talked that day. This "fun" is taking up a bunch of my time and hope it gets going in the right direction before next weekend.

Regardless, at the very least I'll have everything ready, on jack stands, wheels off and ready to go before Sat morning...

If I'm free I'll come by as well. As others have said, it's fairly simple. Just messy. For the master cylinder, you'll probably want to bench bleed it before installing it. I bent up a couple of short brake hard lines from Auto Zone to do it when I put a new master cylinder in my 40. They're just bent so that they screw into the outlets for the regular hard lines and then loop up and into the reservoirs. I was looking for them a couple weeks ago and couldn't find them, but if I find 'em, I'll bring 'em.

That sure would make things a bunch easier. We spent some time laying out the wiring harness today to see how much of a job it really is. We will be trying to take the old one out tomorrow and lay them side-by-side to make installing the new one easier...

Jerry, I have the bench bleed lines bent up and ready if you need them, just give me a call and I can drop them off or you can pick up.

Will do, I'd like to get that done before the weekend. I give you a call later today (Monday) and see what we can work out...

I sent PM's to those that offered assistance this Saturday, with my address and phone number. I'll be tearing down by 9 am, if you can get there then, that's great. If not, anytime will be greatly appreciated.

I'm doing a final parts/tool check tonight to do a shopping trip tomorrow. If you noticed anything I might need, not mentioned in this thread, please don't hesitate to let me know.

Thanks again to everyone who is willing to help out...

I didn't see Shiner Bock on any of your lists.;)

Update on preparedness...

I'll have it all set up in the garage so we won't have to worry about any weather.

I've read through the appropriate threads one more time to make sure I'm as prepared as possible. Picked up the last of the supplies I believe I'll need. Did get some confusing info on the appropriate grease. I only bought "moly" grease, no wheel bearing grease as some suggest. I also ordered a new set of wheel bearings, not know for sure if I'll need them. And, I'm not sure if I'm getting what I need in the wheel bearings from Autozone but thought it safe to have what I could get. The nearest one is about a mile away just in case I forgot something.

Got 2 cans of spray brake cleaner, one gallon of "parts" cleaner with a basket, "bucket" of disposable rags, fresh box of latex gloves, couple pair of "dishwashing" gloves, some cardboard to lay messy parts on with plenty of newspaper to help with that also. I did find a set of brass drift punches, a BFH, pickle fork (even though I've got new tie rod ends) but did not find a decent set of snap ring pliers or a tap/die set to chase threads in M10-1.25 to my "standard". I know that many have offered to bring tools, please do so just in case I don't have what is required. Particularly the "specialty" tools (axle nut socket, fish scale, bench bleed lines, etc.) that I didn't have time to find.

I'll be starting tear down ~ 9am, grill fired up sometime after noon, good football games start 3:30, hope to be cleaned up and ready to enjoy by then. I've also offered to help a member do the "cut" ATRAC hack on his FJC sometime during the project, 5-10 min project at most.

If anyone still needs directions, send me a PM and I'll get you here. Thanks again to everyone who has offered to help and please don't hesitate to let me know if I'm still missing something...

I assume you got diff fluid, but you didn't specifically mention it. As far as the moly you only need 2-3 tubs/tubes for the birfs only. The knuckle bearings and wheel bearings all use wheel bearing grease. Mobil1 is good but I've also used Valvoline (import type).

I would assume the wheel bearings from Autozone will be Timken which are fine.

You will probably want 2 drain pans to catch diff fluid and grease. I can bring one if you need it.
