SILVER Star
Fellow computer geeks,
I'm need of a way to centralize all of our files into one HDD so that multiple computers on my home network can share the same files. This way, I can backup all of my files into one location using Second Copy. This enclosure will be attached to the Netgear router and I'm hoping to use the on-board FTP/HTTP feature to access files when I'm on the road. Currently, I have an 1.5TB Seagate Barracuda internal HDD that's acting as my file server. The Netgear router can only support USB 2.0 but I was thinking ahead for the future by going with the USB 3.0 and/or Firewire options.
In case we have to evacuate the house during a wildfire, I just want to grab our laptops and this HDD and run!
To this end, let me know if you folks have any favorite HDD enclosure as there seems to be a ton of them out there. I don't quite know what the important attributes I should be looking at but here's what I can think of so far:
- hot swappable (big deal?)
- IDE/SATA (need to empty out an old IDE drive or at least see what's inside)
- USB 2.0/3.0
- Firewire (just in case for future. Don't have anything that can run firewire yet)
- external cooling fan? Are they quiet?
- Alum case (for better heat sinking) important?
- external power supply (i'm guessing this is standard)
- anything else?
This looks like a decent bang for the buck factor: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4365888&CatId=2780
Thanks for any input.
